well, i can say that is open to interpretations. just the fact that YOU don't like it doesn't mean it's ugly. for example I think your icon could use a sharping and a balance color, but that's just my opinion, i'm not attacking you.
also, i think it's a very helpful tutorial to explore techniques we might not have tried before (and by we i mean amateurs with no much knowledge of PS tools) and she was just trying to explain it with her icons. i really like the one i got from the tutorial, if you want to go up and say it sucks and it's ugly too, i don't care because i don't think so.
tutorials are meant to help people learn how to use certain things, not about which icon is prettier or uglier.
