So, Tara and I had been waffling for quite some time on the issue of whether to buy a house in or near Grand Rapids. This was mostly a practical issue. On the plus side, it would be nice to roll our monthly housing payment into actual, tangible assets instead of giving it to the landlord. We're also tired of living where we live (although we like it quite well) and paying what we pay, and have exhausted all hope of finding a rental house that is both affordable enough and nice enough to motivate us to pack up and move. At the same time, our long terms plans contemplate not being in Grand Rapids forever and an opportunity to go elsewhere could crop up virtually any time. Owning a house could put a damper on such an opportunity, especially if it arose very soon.
Well, all that is preface for this: during one of the most hectic weeks I've had in my career, and during Tara's last week at Climax-Scotts, we looked at a house, liked it and submitted an offer (at $9k below list, a lowball offer). The seller countered, and we countered back. Yesterday morning the seller accepted. So if inspections go well, we're looking at closing near the end of Feburary and moving late Feburary to early March. All told, we'll pay less each month than we do now. I'm concerned about being able to get out from under the house if indeed some Federal or other spectacular job does come up, but there are definite positives, too. We'll just have to see how things shake out.
Housewarming party!
