A boring afternoon in Parliament gradually becomes a mad scramble at the NHK studio as the shock of a catastrophic 9.0 earthquake arrives in downtown Tokyo.
10 seconds into this video you will see the Early Warning System graphic pop up, a full 30 seconds before the full force of the initial shock hits the Tokyo area -- a testament to the system's value. As Parliament members look up and watch the chandeliers swaying on the ceiling, the feed abruptly changes to the NHK news desk... and the normally placid announcer begins to shout to make himself heard above the violent shaking and staff members yelling excitedly at the control room.
And then, you see the tsunami warning... only the beginning of a day of horror.
