Apparently it's much more possible than you'd think.

[She's still striving for a light tone of voice, but any humour that might have been there before is most definitely gone now.]

I had some people look into it. No one in his "hometown" remembers him or his family ever having lived there. Wherever he came from, it certainly wasn't there.
