Canon Character and Series: Huang Rong, Legend of the Condor Heroes 2008 ver. (lit. translation: "Legend of the Condor-Shooting Heroes")
In-Game Name: Huang Rong
Age: 18
Gender: Female
Position & Ship: Record Keeper, Amestris.
Appearance:
Huang Rong is really pretty, though not very tall. Her features are sweet, making it hard for people to refuse her things when she pouts. Her long black hair is usually only partly bound, leaving most of it free. She hardly ever chooses to wear dark colours, usually opting for light, pastel colours instead.
Personality:
In contrast to her appearance, Huang Rong has a really bad personality. She's bossy, petty, over-confident, spoiled and mean. She expects to be the centre of the world and is often irritated when she isn't. She doesn't so much have a sharp temper as she has mood swings (though it quite often swings in the direction of anger). She also hates having to explain herself. And when she wins, she likes her victories to be complete. It's not enough to win: she will usually humiliate her opponent as well.
If she were stupid, her abrasive personality would only make her a nuisance. Unfortunately, Huang Rong is about as far from stupid as one could get. Making her the kind of nuisance that almost always manages to one-up everyone else.
She is not, however, without redeeming features. These include her loyalty to the people she cares about, and the fact that, spoiled brat she may be, but she's not a bad person and any maliciousness she does display is more childish than anything else.
There's nothing she wouldn't do for the people she cares about. There are no stakes or any price that's too high if it means she could protect them, not even if it puts her own life in danger. She will also accept in them the qualities that she would usually despise, even if she does nag at them a lot for it. This also extends, to some degree, to the people her important people care about (even if she personally hates their guts), but only because it will make the people she actually cares about happy. Any sleight or threat against any of these people is unacceptable, and anyone unfortunate enough to have attempted this will find out quickly that Huang Rong is a force to be reckoned with. She is, of course, exempt from this, because she can pick on her loved ones and throw tantrums at them as much as she likes.
And though she wouldn't follow anyone else's rules or principles (sometimes not even the law) unless it suited her, she would never abandon her own principles and she wouldn't stand around and do nothing if something she deems to be wrong was happening.
She can be as charming and sweet as she appears when she feels like it, but she never bothers to hide any aspect of her personality. This is not, as some would suggest, because she hates lying or because she feels people ought to be true to themselves. She just doesn't think there's any problem with her personality.
She's never apologized for anything before in her life and she likes sweets, the arts, martial arts and beautiful things.
Abilities/Weapons:
From her father, she learned martial arts, cooking, music and medicine.
She was mostly taught the style of martial arts her father created but because her father likes to collect martial arts like some people collect novelty spoons, she can actually recognize most notable martial arts styles and use a few of them. She was also taught a technique where-in by pressing certain pressure points she could immobilize certain parts of the body or cause someone's body to freeze up.
She also carries a green staff around the length of her arm as a weapon. It is sometimes known as the "Green Jade Staff" but more commonly refered to as the "Dog-Beating Staff" (Huang Rong prefers the latter name and never even mentions that it's other name exists). The staff itself and the "Dog Beating Staff Technique" were passed onto her by someone else and not her father.
Her father also taught her about medicine and she knows how to treat most poisons, and is well-versed in herbal medicine. She had also inherited her mother's photographic memory and both her parents' talent for math and numbers.
But her greatest asset is her intelligence and her ability to strategize.
How well can your character hack?: Easy.
Weaknesses:
Though her martial arts training means Huang Rong can hit harder and move faster than most normal people, she is still slight of build which puts her at a disadvantage when she's up against bigger opponents. She also has limited reach, especially with the technique involving pressure points since she has to get right up close to use it.
But her greatest weakness is tied to her greatest strength: her intelligence. Like most cunning people, Huang Rong doesn't believe she could ever be wrong because she hardly ever is. When she is wrong, she doesn't notice until it's too late.
She's also impulsive, at times deciding to do something on nothing more than a whim.
History:
Her father is a martial arts collecting, anti-social man who lives on a small island south-east of the shores of Vohemar with only his family and a few disciples. He's bossy, arrogant, unsympathetic, arrogant and will only do things if he wants to, and only if he can do it his way. In personality, Huang Rong is pretty much the splitting image of her father. Her mother, though brilliant, was weak physically and often ill, which was the reason for Huang Rong's father's study in medicine. But even with his expertise in medicine, he still couldn't save her and Huang Rong's mother passed away when she was very little.
Her mother's body buried on the island which, after her death, Huang Rong's father sore never to leave again. Whenever father or daughter misses her, they could be found there.
But Huang Rong had a happy childhood, despite all this.
Though her father did not like children in general, he adored his daughter. His disciples, who respected both him and his wife, doted on her as well. Apart from martial arts, her father also took interests in the arts and cooking and beautiful things, interests he managed to pass onto Huang Rong. People outside of their island knew her father and his disciples to be cold, uncaring and strange. But as far as Huang Rong is concerned, he's just the big softie who'd cave every time she cried. She adores her father and would not stand for anyone to disrespect him (it's okay when she does it. She's his daughter; it's her right.)
The fact that she had a group of incredibly dangerous martial artists wrapped around her little finger had a lot to do with how she turned out.
Once she was old enough, it wasn't uncommon for her to run away from home when she and her father disagreed on something. It was during one of these trips that she met another martial artist who knew her father. After a few misadventures together, she grew to respect him and he passed ownership of the "Dog Beating Staff" and knowledge of its use onto Huang Rong and in giving her these things to her, also gave her the title of 19th Chief of the Beggars' Sect.
On a personal level, the members of the Beggars' Sect are completely not the kind of people Huang Rong usually associates with. They're filthy, unattractive and chivalrous. But she was their Chief, and even though her father always taught her not to associate with ugly or dirty people, they were still her people now. Which meant that she would protect them and lead them to the best of her ability.
It was also the first time she was truly responsible for something (most children started practicing with /dogs/). She was expected to answer if they called and, as Chief, if any member of the Sect did something wrong, she was the one who had to smooth things over. Not to mention that she had to keep the peace between the different factions within the sect itself, all the while meeting the approval of the elders, who together have the power to make the Chief step-down.
That was a couple of years ago.
The different factions still give her the occasional headache and even after all this time she hasn't quite gotten used to the idea of being responsible for other people (though she has gotten good at it).
But, she takes all this in stride because not-so secretly, she's proud to be not only the first female Chief of the Beggars' Sect, but also the youngest.
She's also discovered that being Chief means she has one of the largest and most effective information gathering networks at her command, not to mention quite a few accomplished martial artists. Of course, to use it, she needs to keep a pidgeon with her, because most of the people in the Sect don't own differece engines. And pigeons are filthy. They're not even cute.
SAMPLES-
Third Person (roleplay):
"You wanna say that again?" The restauraunt owner cowered in front of the mountain of a man glaring at him. Neither of them noticed a slim, girl dressed in pastel yellow watching them from a table not too far away. The man flexed the muscles in his arm, "Well, do ya?!"
"Could you keep it down?" A sweet voice asked and all heads whipped around to its source, "Your presence is ruining my appetite."
They saw a young girl, slight of build sipping her tea. A short green staff rested on the table top.
"You trying to pick a fight, girlie?"
Huang Rong put on a smile that practically sparkled, "My Daddy always taught me not to pick fights with ugly people." The crowd hushed as the man's eye twitched, but all Huang Rong did was smile around her cup, before putting it down again. She wrinkled her nose, "And could you please move back? Your stench is making me nauseous."
No doubt, she thought to herself, everyone thinks I'm a dead-person.
But, though the man was big, she doubted he could hit anything. Not with the way he was telegraphing that punch. He hadn't even finished the strike before her Dog-Beating Staff was slamming into the side of his head hard enough to knock him out. She finished off the last of the cakes as everyone else stared in shock.
"He can pay for my food." She said gesturing towards the fallen body as she got up to leave.
"But what do we do about.."
She raised a brow when the owner started gesturing towards the same body, "Throw him in the river." And left without caring about the gapes her comment received.
First Person (journal):
(There is a soft cooing sound in the back ground and a huff)
I hate pidgeons. I should start a fund to get every Elder a Difference Engine. I'm sure it would be cheaper in the long run because WE WOULDN'T HAVE TO FEED THE STUPID THINGS! Ugh.
I swear, as soon as I find something better, I'm going to take this bird throw it into boiling oil. While it's still alive.
On the other hand, the rooms on this ship are simply gorgeous. I wish I could take all this home with me.
...
Hmm...
(Oh, and Joseph Falls' magnificent beard.)
Beggars' Sect:
The Beggars' Sect is a highly-recognized martial arts sect that has existed in Reial for centuries. The members uphold justice and helps those in need through chivalrous acts. Because they are spread all over Reial, the Sect has an efficient network of communication (which means Huang Rong only needs to keep one pidegon, that will relay whatever information she needs spread amongst the sect and the person who receives this will then take care of spreading it to everyone else). Because of the Sect's size and the fact that the members blend in easily, they have a reputation for being excellent information-gatherers.
They hold a meeting bi-monthly to discuss what to do about current events and, when the world is mostly peaceful, to get together and have a drink. The recent unrest in Reial has made many higher ranking members, including Huang Rong herself nervous. The lack of any real information they could gather has only to served to make Huang Rong even more suspicious.
The members is comprised mostly of beggars, but membership is extended to people from different vocations as well. As such, the sect is separated into two factions the "dirty clothing" and "clean clothing" sections with the former being for beggars and the latter for non-beggars. Demi-human members are not uncommon especially in areas of greater discrimination.
Members can be recognized by a special pouch they carry. Every member carries at least one pouch, with nine being the maximum amount. The number of pouches one carries indicates your rank. The ones who carry eight pouches are in charge of the various headquarters spread across Reial. The Chief doesn't need to carry these pouches because the Chief's rank is symbolised by the Dog-Beating Staff.
Elders, who are second only to the Chief carries nine pouches and hold the right to remove the Chief from power if he (or I guess in this case, she) fails in their duties. The duties of the elders involve over-seeing the teaching of martial arts to other members and discipline.
The "Eighteen Dragon-Subduing Palm" and the "Dog-Beating Staff Technique" are unique to the Beggars' Sect, with the latter being a technique that can only be learned by the Chief.
