Rock N Roll Pub Crawl

March is going to be one insanely busy month! And its already started off really well :-). I was pretty bored and lonely staying in my room last weekend, so this weekend I decided that the situation needed to change. Friday night was mellow, but fun. I and 4 of my friends ordered pizza to come to campus and took over the common living room to watch "13 Going On 30" (oddly titled "Suddenly 30" in Australia) and gab. It was a very nice and very typical girl's night in, lol, and a good way to start the weekend.

Saturday was amazing. Even though I had SCUBA class at 8:00am Sunday my friends and I couldn't resist the temptation of going to the JCU Dive Club's annual Pub Crawl, proclaimed to be one of the biggest and best social events on campus. The theme of the night was "Rock N Roll", so everyone was supposed to dress up and party like rock stars. The night started at about 6pm when everyone got together for a pre-party BBQ. I LOVED the costumes that everyone was wearing. We had 4 guys dressed up as KISS, two girls going as the Blues Brothers, a ton of people dressed as wonderfully tacky 80's hair band guys, a Village person (yeah, just one lol), and a bunch of other creative costumes. Sadly, I just went in normal clothes, didn't have the time or the cash to go out and get stuff, but it's all good because I wasn't the only one...I just labeled myself as a "Groupie" hehe. Good enough.

By the time 7pm rolled around there were about 50 of us that piled onto a bus and made our way to the first pub. The rules for pub #1 were that you had to call everyone either "Mate" or "Matt", that if you were drinking beer you had to have a shot of...I forget the name, but it's the same thick and sugary concentrate that you use when making a bunch of punch for a big party...like the crap they mix with water in cafeterias to make "juice". If anyone was caught breaking the rules they had to "scale" or chug their drink. Also, the "Peg Game" was introduced. Bascially, two clothes pins are floating around the room and people are trying to sneak up on each other and put the clothespin onto one another's hair, outfit, etc. As soon as a clothespin makes it onto somebody, everyone starts counting down from 10 to one really loudly. If you hear a countdown, in that 10 seconds you have to check your whole body to see if you've been "Pegged". If you find the clothespin on your body and pull it off before the countdown finishes you're safe and get to peg someone else. If not, you have to endure the "snorkle of death", which is basically a beer bong with a snorkle attatched at the bottom. First pub was sketchy, but fun, and my group of girls successfully avoided getting pegged.

After 30 minutes everyone got back onto the bus and we made our way to pub #2. The rules for pub #2 were that if you were drinking you had to be drinking with your left hand (easy for me, being a lefty) and that you couldn't point at anyone or anything. Peg game still applied. By pub #2 some of the guys had figured out my group's strategy of standing in a corner with our backs to the bar so that we wouldn't get pegged. At that point, it became the personal mission of the guy in charge of Dive Club to make sure that all of my friends and I would have to do the snorkle of death at some point in the evening. =P He did manage to get Vikki pegged, and we all had a great time singing songs and playing pool.

Back on the bus for pub #3. On the bus the guys in charge tell us we're going to play "Pass the Parcel". Bascially, it's like the game Hot Potato; everyone is passing around this package wrapped in layer upon layer of newspaper. Everyone on the bus is singing this song/chant that goes "Beastiality's great, Mate! Beastiality's great--Fuck a Wallaby!" and passing around the parcel. Every time the whistle blows whoever is holding it gets to take off a layer of newspaper. I got to take one off, but didn't win anything...one guy ended up winning a tackle box, and another guy won a snorkle. I thought it was an awesome game, simple but fun, and a cool way to pass the time while we traveled. We finally arrive to pub #3. The rule is easy, you have to walk backwards the entire time (which was funny but difficult, being intoxicated while going up and down stairs is hard!) and of course the peg game still applied. Four of my friends and I got off the bus first, backwards, and start walking into this bar. We were all startled because as soon as we start walking towards the bar from the bus everyone inside started to cheer. We turn around to see what's going on, and it turns out that there are about 40 guys or so in the pub...it's ALL men...cheering for the five girls coming into the pub. Weird and creepy! I ended up getting pegged at pub #3 =P. I KNEW it was coming. The guy in charge was sitting next to me, and then calmly asks "who can count backwards from 10 really fast?" then my wonderfully drunk friend Amy counts backwards as FAST as she can thinking it's a contest or something. Even though I caught on quickly and started searching I didn't make it in time, so I had to do the snorkle while my dive instructor held it for me, lol. Not too long after Michael decided that since I was his "groupie" we needed to do a shot together. I stupidly said I'd never done a shot before, so he INSISTED that we do a shot together, and I had my 1st shot ever, Tequila style, hehe. Pub #3 wrapped up, and making it back onto the bus backwards was getting more difficult than ever =P!

On our way to pub #4 we had a fashion show. It was really funny watching people dressed up and drunk trying to do a catwalk down a moving bus! At pub #4 the rule was that that while you were drinking your free hand had to be on someone else's ass...fun stuff haha, and of course, peg game still on. Pub #4 was pretty mellow for me. I started slowing myself down and sat on a stool for the duration of our time there. I also found out that I was getting charged less for drinks because I'm American, or something. HA. I rule.

Pub #5 was my favorite. Lots of dancing around...conga lines and all...You should've seen the looks on the faces of the unsuspecting patrons at each pub we visited as a bus pulls up and 50 rowdy college kids dressed as rock stars pour out. Priceless. Not too much else to say about pub #5, except old men really need to stop dancing up on young girls. There's just nothing good about it =P. After that we got dropped off at the House Party. I REALLY wanted to stay, but knew I had SCUBA class in the morning. While I was waiting for the cab I had two people trying to toss me into the pool, but luckily David came to rescue me and we all made it home safely =).

Needless to say, the next morning was pretty painful, and my dive instructor wasn't in the best mood, either haha. I didn't do super well on my SCUBA final (oops, but can you blame me?) but hopefully that shouldn't prevent me from passing....I hope! Class was still fun; I had a much easier time with all the gear on than last week and am one of the fastest learners in the group. Again, I rule ;-). That's all I have to tell for right now, I'll be updating in about a week or so. The plans for this week are: hiking up Castle Hill tomorrow morning, and a 2 night live-aboard SCUBA trip to the Great Barrier Reef this weekend. Then I'll be officially certified! Yay! Until next time...
