All reasonable people who don't actually live with their head permanently shoved up a portable possum's potty know by now that drug prohibition doesn't work. Even if by "work" you mean "reduce drug use", which is a stupid puritan attitude that's rooted in good old-fashioned spoilsportery. Of course it is possibly worth noting that what Portugal didn't do was legalise drugs and that technically they remain 'prohibited' substances. Trafficking and supply of drugs within the country still results in criminal penalties and possession for personal use remains an offence, albeit without penalty beyond confiscation.

The problem is in America is that if you raise the issue outside a certain group of people relatively smart people start jabbing, convinced that 'their kids' will be threated if you decriminalize drugs.

Realistically, momentum is gaining but we're so far back right now I can't see much happening soon, even if our current leadership is starting to return the country's policies to the Real World.
