[when the camera activates, the first image it catches is of a retreating back as it walks away from the desktop. the webcam is adjusted in a way that captures a great deal of the room in frame - grimy tiled walls, dusty metal operating (or perhaps autopsy) tables, cabinets with rows of bottles and lab equipment visible behind opaque glass. the ( Read more... )

[Aaand here is a slightly aghast expression.]

... did you try that out on yourself?

Try what? The Fentanyl?

[he swivels to the side in his chair to the end of the desk and comes back with a metal tray. on it is a dead rat. he drops the tray in clear view of the camera where it clatters noisily.]

The first version proved to be very unstable. This right here is the result. The other rats I've injected the one I've just showed you all with have been showing all the typical symptoms of heavy sedation, but as I've said, I still need to do a few more experiments to make sure it's absolutely safe.

[Flinches a bit at that. Not a pretty sight.]

Well. That's good. Do you think you'll be able to make a lot of that? I mean, is it sustainable?

[he nods and sits back in his chair, trying to relax with very little success. the light is starting to hurt his eyes so he settles on closing them as he speaks.]

As sustainable as I could make it with what little components we have available, yes. Chemistry is a very tricky affair if you don't know what you're doing. Wasting materials on those rats was horrible enough, but now that I have a stable recipe, I think - yes, I know I can make more.

[a fluctuation in the steady rise and fall of his chest as he sighs silently to himself.]

Provided our supplies stay intact for a little while longer.

Provided that, yeah. Though so far, whatever is keeping us here seems bent on having us survive for a while.

[A small smile.]

Great work, by the way. I think that'll come in handy.

[Poor rats, though.]

If you believe in that type of thing. Maybe it likes its food thoroughly tenderized.

[but he's never been one to go with the flow, social or otherwise.]

It's a start. I still have many more drugs that can - and will - be synthesized with what is left

[That comment earns him a look of disgust.]

... I could've done without that mental image.

[But she knows it may very well be true. She sighs, worriees at her lip.]

Anyway, that's great. May save lives.

[Even if she balks a little at the idea of imbibing weird future medicine that kills rats.]

It has gone unsaid for too long. [-which is just his roundabout way of saying get over it.]

...Yes, it "may" do just that. I take it you know very little about medicine.

Yeah, yeah.

Not about medicine like that.

[Vague gesture, and maybe a tiny wrinkle of the nose.]

It's marketed under many brand names, but the base drug is used daily at hospitals. It's perfectly safe compared to using ether, the majority of which are flammable.

Are you familiar with yarrow?

Yes. The last one.

[YEAH she's pretty clueless, actually. Save for a few recipes from mommy dearest.]

Then you'll know that it's one of the few herbs out there with properties that aren't used for placebos - that is, to calm a patient down by giving them a fake cure. It can be used to create tonics and oils that are good for curing influenza, internal bleeding, constipation and a variety of other illnesses.

[he reaches over to pick up a small bottle containing a bluish-green powder, showing it briefly to the camera.]

Not all medicine can be created with complex chemicals. The trick is to find the right compounds that'll do in a pinch.

[Well, she didn't know all that, but she can pretend. At least she knew about some of those effects.]

Ah, so you made it with good old yarrow. Yes, that's familiar.
