"You pansy!"
"Jimmy! Jimmy, get in!"
They're all floating in the water already, treading the water. Jimmy is sixteen and inexperienced and fucking cold, but she's in the water, and there's at least one part of his anatomy that's willing to jump in and tackle things they've only ever tried on land. They've found the deepest fountain-pool in town, and the most illegal, and the most dirty, and Jimmy'll be fucked if she's jumped in and he hasn't.
"Shit, man!" Jimmy says, walking closer to the edge, toeing off his trainers, "'s about three degrees, yeah? Just so you know, you're all bleeding mad."
"And's not like you're not fuckin' about, taking your time, eh, Connelly? Beginning to think someone's thinking that turning about and heading off to his mum's sounding fairly brilliant, then."
"Aw, feck off, Seamus. He's just being dramatic. Come on, Jimmy, give us a show!" And Jimmy slow-grins at Peter, who's always been best at getting him to do shit, aside from her, and he strips off his jumper and shirt to catcalls and low whistles and bass beats that're off-key and ridiculous. He tells them all to fuck off, and his muscles tense -- a bit to show off and a lot from the cold.
It's all fun and good until Jimmy sneezes. "Who the fuck decided to do this in autumn?" he yells, but peels off his socks (damp from a cold sweat), and pulls off his trousers and pants and, before any of them can get another word in, and before his dad's voice can sound in his head again, jumps in.
Plus! An outtake for you:The water is warm, which makes this even better.
Jimmy is smirking, because he learned something from being a reluctant docu' star, and that was how to use light to your advantage. He knows the shadows are playing across his torso in such a way that the glinting, wavering pool lights are showing just the right glimpses, and that if he tiptoes a little bit to his right, he'll be giving a little too much away.
(The look on Caleb's face is telling Jimmy that giving too much away would be perfectly okay with him. It's also saying that dragging this out will lead to a place much better than perfectly okay. Jimmy's never been a fan of treats that are only half-baked.)
