Jacob had mostly worked with engines before coming to the island, hands all greased up from some half-running motorcycle or old carburetor. There weren't a lot of vehicles on the island though, not really, and while he had a motorcycle he tinkered with occasionally, he knew deep down he'd never get enough gas to actually be able to ride it even if ( Read more... )

Steve's at the Compound with the main intention of doing some laundry, possibly scavenging the contents of the Clothes Box for a few more articles to call his own - and maybe picking up some more ties for Danny if he finds a few that aren't ridiculously patterned or neon-colored.

He's getting ready to head to the right level when he happens to pass by the bulletin board just as the younger man's tacking up a sign - and a certain phrase catches his attention.

"Cliff diving?" he asks, out loud, before he can stop himself. For once, he's actually very grateful Danny's not here to dissuade him from inquiring.

"Yeah. Have you ever done it before?" Jacob asked, happy that someone seemed to be taking an interest. It would almost be like being back at La Push, in a way, if he could get a group together to do it. The cliffs on the island weren't as jagged or high as La Push either, which would make it easier for beginners.

"It doesn't matter if you haven't. I'm up to teaching anyone how to do it as long as they're not scared."

"Back home, a couple of times," Steve admitted, his gaze scanning over the rest of the notice. There were spots on Hawaii's islands perfect for it, most of which he'd discovered as a teenager, back when he and Mary had been left to their own devices and he'd chosen to go exploring.

"I wasn't aware there were cliffs here," he added, his tone mildly reflecting surprise.

"There's a waterfall," Jacob explained. "It's not ideal, obviously, but we don't have cliffs on our beaches the way they did back home in La Push. Of course, the water's actually warm here so I guess I can't complain too much."

He considered it for a moment. "I've jumped the falls a couple times here. The pool's deep enough if you're watching what you're doing."

Claire remembered pretty well, the fact that Jacob had mentioned wanting to start up classes for the brave and daring. Perhaps he hadn't worded it as such, but if there was one thing Claire knew about Jacob, it was that he was in tune with the earth, that he understood it to the point where all of its cliffs, its edges, and so much more, just became a part of his own experience. And while she knew, coming from the cookie-cutter Texan life that she did, even with everything that had happened to her in the past few months she couldn't even begin to compete with Jacob's understanding of himself as part of that greater whole, still she couldn't help wondering what it'd be like to feel that rush.

She leaned against the wall shortly after he'd pinned up his notice, tilting her head.

"So, what's the kiddie version of cliff diving?" she asked jokingly.

"Trampoline," Jacob said quickly, grinning at Claire. He was glad to see she was doing better but it still hadn't seemed that long ago that she was in the clinic. It was hard to shake that image from his mind, a friend that injured, and he wondered now if he should have been so reckless back home. Bella must have been a nervous wreck.

"When you get medically cleared for jumping off things for the fun of it, I'm happy to teach you the real thing. It's...a rush. It's absolutely the best feeling in the world, at least to me."

"Trampoline," Claire repeated with a skeptical raise of her brow, closing her eyes just long enough to try and compare jumping on the trampoline to diving off a cliff. In all honesty, the two seemed as different as night and day, but then again, cliff diving was one of those things that didn't seem to have much gradation. What difference was there between leaping from fifty feet up and two hundred? "Well, since I've been jumping on trampolines since I was a kid, I guess that means I've got a leg up on the beginners."

Shrugging a shoulder, Claire nodded. "But yes, cross my heart, I won't start jumping off of cliffs until I'm ready. Which is admittedly not yet."

"Good," Jacob said, tone a little warmer and lower. "I was really worried about you. I didn't really want to show it since I figured there were plenty of people hovering around you and freaking you out but I was, underneath. I wanted to be sure you'd be okay. You don't think that's weird or anything, do you?"

It hadn't been out of anything other than friendship and maybe it was a little because Claire was kind of like Bella like that, doing something reckless. He didn't know Claire's motivations or need to know them, no, but it was generally accepted that most people didn't fall or jump off roofs on a regular basis. There might be something deeper there, but Jacob didn't want to pry.

Belle was pleased to see him putting up the sign because she knew that it was something that he would be excellent with. "Have you had anyone come up to sign up yet?" she asked excitedly as she approached, pressing her hands to his shoulders to get the leverage to lean up and press a kiss to his cheek, wiggling on her tiptoes to keep balance.

"Um, a couple people," Jacob said, pleased that he was able to say that. As much as he loved helping Shari around the Homestead and setting up parties, he'd really missed being able to go diving and riding with his friends so hopefully this would help fill that hole. It had the added benefit of sharing something he loved with the island and made it feel a little more like home.

The island was more home than home was. Jacob wondered when, exactly, that had happened. He suspected it had a good deal to do with Belle and Shari and the Homestead.

"Are you interested? I'd teach you, of course. We could even have private lessons."

"Am I interested in the part where I would dive off cliffs?" she echoed, making sure that she knew what she was signing up for. "Well, I mean, I like the idea of it." The idea had adventure and delight to it. "Would you pull me with you if I panicked at the top?"

"I wouldn't drag you if you got scared," Jacob said, thinking it over. "But I'd do anything I could do to help make you feel safe. We could even start small, if you wanted, and work up to the big one?"

Jacob grinned at her and nodded. "It's a two man, so you'll have help from me if you want. I think Coraline's got one too so we could make a little expedition out of it or something. Maybe go over to the other island and have a look around? I've never been over there myself."

Jacob laughed at her enthusiasm, glad someone else was finding it just as exciting as he did. This place was kind of like one big outdoor playground and all it took was one person brave enough to lead the expedition. Jacob was willing to take on that task.

"I was thinking we'd meet in the Compound before lessons. Is that where you live or is there somewhere more centralized?"

"I'm happy to teach," Jacob said, trying to figure the girl out. He didn't know her, but that didn't mean much; new people arrived on the island daily and it was hard to keep track of everyone who came in and out. "Do you know how to swim? I mean, I can teach you how but I like to make sure before I start throwing people off cliffs that they're not going to drown."

Maybe he ought to have them sign waivers or something.

"I can rescue if it comes to that," Jacob said, wanting to be sure this girl knew that he wasn't going to throw her in the deep end and not look back. "I don't want anyone getting hurt or anything doing this, you know? That's the only real risk I see, someone getting injured because they can't swim."

Or hit their head on rocks but Jacob hoped he'd be a better instructor than that.
