Several months and another lifetime ago, Hiccup had needed a basket of fish and a lot of tricks to get the new tail on Toothless. Now, the dragon sat still for him as he was buckled into the leather saddle and metal spines that connected the tail fin to Hiccup’s left foot pedal. Checking as he went along, Hiccup lingered on the left stirrup. Where ( Read more... )

Coraline leaned back, bare feet in the stream as she watched the clouds pass her by. It was just another boring Monday with too many classes and nothing fun to do. Nothing ever happened on the island, nothing at all.

Coraline blinked as something dark flew across the sky. Sitting up suddenly and grinned in realisation. Yelling, she whooped with excitement when she saw Hiccup and Toothless flying above her. Dropping her wellies Coraline ran down the boardwalk sending Miss Delirium flying as she ran into her and past her. Coraline yelled a belated sorry as she laughed, running as quickly as she could towards the beach.

"GO HICCUP!" Coraline yelled bouncing in the sand and waving to Hiccup and Toothless. It was amazing. "Looking good Toothless!"

As one, they heard her and Toothless tipped his head the smallest bit sideways to acknowledge Hiccup's grin. With a shift of his leg, Hiccup changed the spread of Toothless' fin and they coasted down sideways, pulling in close next to her and then teasing away just to hear her protest.

Then they turned again and wheeled down in the sky so Toothless could land.

"Hey!"

Coraline squeaked, clasping her hands together as she watched Hiccup and Toothless completely and utterly absorbed in their aerial display. Coraline watched as they flew down close to her and then pulled away.

"Meanie!" Coraline yelled good naturedly, laughing as she watched them. Coraline took a step back just in case and waited for them to descend. As soon as they touched the ground Coraline was going to pounce. "That was brilliant. You're flying again, you're both flying. That's so amazing Hiccup and you too Toothless."

Hiccup grinned as he swung his right leg over and kicked the latch that freed his left so that he could leap down into the sand, grinning at her. Toothless was close behind, circling up to her gleefully. If it were possible, he might even describe the dragon as giddy.

"We've been trying for ages! We did it! Finally!"

It's Reynald who notices first, before the dragon's shadow has had a chance to fall over the ground. "Doofus!" he proclaims gleefully, waving his arms in the air at his flying friend. "Fly, Doofus fly!"

Robb follows his son's waving arms, and to his surprise, doesn't feel the apprehension that used to follow the flight of a dragon.

"Wave, Dada!" Reynald demands, and Robb does, one arm lifted in salute to the soaring pair.

Even from above, he could recognize Robb and Reynald and he leaned in the saddle and shifted his foot, indicating to Toothless where he'd like to go. The dragon snorted and hovered down low but refused to land; Hiccup couldn't blame him. If they could stay up, they would. So, circling ever lower, he grinned and waved back.

"Fly!" Reynald demands, and Robb scoops him up onto his shoulders so he's that much closer.

"You made it up!" he calls up with a wide grin. It's hard not to be excited for them; even Toothless looks rather smug and pleased.

"I did!" he shouted back, fighting the urge to add a whoop of glory after his answer. "We did it!"

Helen had seen a great many beautiful things in her life but it was hard to compare them with the raw, untamed beauty of a dragon in flight. She watched, mouth agape and slightly in awe, and called out to Hiccup as soon as she could find her voice again.

"You've done it! I knew you would."

Hiccup laughed and whooped before he finally found it in him to urge Toothless down. Adrenaline and joy shot through him as he tumbled from the dragon's back, barely remembering to release the catch on his leg.

"We flew! We flew!"

"And amazingly well," Helen agreed, clapping her hands a little in excitement. "That wing replacement is very clever, Hiccup. I'm quite impressed with the design."

And even more impressed with the engineer. He was young, yes, but clearly talented.

"Had a lot of practice, that's all," he explained, shrugging. "The first couple of tries didn't look as cool as this."

"Holy crap."

It was a bit of a strain on her chest for Claire to be leaning back and staring at the boy flying above, but she found that the pain barely registered as she struggled to watch both Hiccup and Toothless as they soared through the air, her heart feeling as though it'd leapt right up with them to the sky. After gawking for a few moments, Claire began waving animatedly, both arms in wide arcs as her eyes were wide with wonder, toes leaving the sand as she jumped up and down on the beach.

"Holy crap," she repeated, feeling giddy, dizzy, ecstatic for Hiccup's success before she finally sunk down to the beach to just marvel in the sight. "You finally did it!"

It took a long second for her words to register through the haze of excitement they felt this high above but when they did he laughed and waved back, getting caught up enough to wave with both arms. For that, Hiccup jolted up higher, nearly knocking him out, and Hiccup remembered to grab the saddle with at least one hand.

"We got it! We figured it out!"

A sudden surge of panic passed through Claire as she watched Hiccup bob through the air; even though she knew that Toothless was completely devoted to the Viking, sometimes people or animals weren't entirely aware of their actions. (Or maybe Claire was just too caught up in potential injuries, so shortly after her own fall.) Letting her hand briefly rest on her chest, Claire took a deep breath before continuing to wave.

"I'm so happy for you!" she called out from on the beach, leaning forward to wrap her arms around her knees. "Oh my god, this is amazing."

Toothless caught the pause in her and suddenly veered toward the beach so fast that Hiccup had to comply. Down they went so that the dragon could pad over to her and sit, head tilted. Hiccup laughed and rubbed his ears. "He's still saying hello."

It took a lot to impress Hester Shaw. After all she's seen and done, she knows the world all too well. Wonders are so easily corrupted into something crass, technology that can save lives can take them just as easily, and everybody had an agenda.

Still, she is caught by surprise when she sees the boy and his dragon flying overhead. She looks up, arms limp by her sides, and stares as Hiccup soars. And as she watches, she feels a twinge within her... something that might be awe.

Staring slackjawed -- though one wouldn't know it with the scarf over her mouth -- she raises one arm over her head in a gesture that's half wave, half salute.

Hiccup recognized his strange friend from the forge and gave a wordless shout, half-greeting and half exclamation of sheer joy at being alive and flying again.

"We did it!"

Hester moved her hand side to side as her salute became a wave. She smiled beneath her scarf, though it felt bittersweet. She could understand that exhilaration. She'd felt it flying the Jenny Hanniver, dodging Green Storm airships or racing ahead of sky pirates. Those were good memories... except they contained Tom. Who she'd never see again -- never wanted to see again -- and, a treacherous part of her had to admit, who she missed very much.

They skirted closer so he could wave at her again before he urged Toothless back up, higher and higher, like they could chase the sun. Occasionally they dipped back down to see if she was still there.
