This may be suffering from canonocity fail. I haven't rewatched this arc recently, nor have I written much K/L (yet).
"So, what is it you wanted to talk to me about?"
Adama eased himself onto the couch next to her and handed her a drink. "Can't we just talk? I miss how we used to just do that."
"Of course." She sipped her drink slowly, hoping he would speak first.
"It's been a while since I went over to Pegasus. How are things over there?"
"They're fine." Kara took another sip. "Lee's new XO bugs the crap out of me."
Adama smiled. "Have you ever met an XO that didn't bug the crap out of you?"
She smirked. "No, sir, I don't think so."
He chuckled. "So, how is Lee getting along? When I go over there, I get the sense that he's acting differently from how he would if I wasn't there."
She smiled. "You're his dad. He wants to impress you."
"I know. That's why I'm trying to figure out what goes on when I'm not there."
Kara shrugged and looked down at her drink. She ran her thumb along the rim of her glass. "It's been a month. I think he's still getting used to command. But overall, he's doing a good job."
"Now, you and I are coming at this from the standpoint of having served on battlestars. Lee's been in the reserves. How do you think he compares to your past commanders?"
Kara ran her tongue over her top lip. Well, I wasn't frakking the rest of them. "He's definitely the least experienced commander I've ever had. This is your second ship and it was Meyer's third."
Adama nodded. "He went straight from CAG to Commander. I know I learned most of what I know about command during my time as an XO."
"That's what I've always heard is true for most people." She paused. "Sir, can I ask why you didn't give it to Tigh?"
Adama pursed his lips. "I offered. He said no."
She nodded. He obviously didn't want to pursue the matter any further. "I know there's really nobody else as qualified. And I'm not saying he's doing a bad job-"
"It's a learning experience." Adama didn't look at her. "How are you two getting along? I know your mentioned your thoughts on Major Shaw."
Kara stiffened. Did he know? What was he getting at?
"We're fine," she said hesitantly.
"Does he listen to you? A good Commander always listens to his CAG when it comes to matters of the flight deck."
She tried to disguise her sigh of relief. "Sometimes, sir. Sometimes, he acts like he still is CAG."
Adama laughed. "That sounds like Lee." He took a long sip. "Maybe we should have him join us next time?"
She laughed, too. "Then you couldn't use these little chats to get all the Pegasus dirt."

This is so sweet. *happy sigh*
I also love Kara being nervous that Bill is going to find out about her and Lee (like she slip at any moment) while Bill seems characteristically oblivious. :)

HEE! I don't know why but I wasn't expecting this and that was rather delightful.
Actually I also really like that Bill asks about Lee's prowess considering he was in the reserves. I always find it interesting that little nugget of knowledge.

HA! I agree with Tara, this line was a total surprise and quiet delightful!
This scene very much feels like one of their conversations, similar to the first AoC one where they have a gentle heart-to-heart. I adore it when pilots talk about each other when one is not present, so this hits the spot! Thank you for writing for my first post! *squish*

Thanks! I'm so glad you liked it and that it was reminiscent of AoC - that's what I was going for. So happy when you get what I was going for with new characters!

I feel like Kara thinks Lee isn't doing so hot as Commander which is fascinating. I think she really pushes him to be his best because she believes he *can* do it, not because she believes he can't.
It makes a lot of sense that Bill would ask Kara about Lee here. He needs him to do well but he might not want to go through totally official channels. Plus he knows Kara knows Lee well. This was just a really enjoyable and thought provoking fic.

This is an interesting take on what Kara and Adama might be thinking about Lee when he was CO.
Small point of order(and you can ignore me if you want to); Lee being reserve doesn't matter. The active reserves serve in the exact same capacity and in the exact same places as active. The vast majority of officers, if not all of them, are commissioned into the active reserve, even out of the service academies. At least that was my experience.

This feels really honest and right and true to both of them. Him pushing and her hedging but giving enough to keep him in the know. It's so interesting how easily they interact compared to him and Lee. Good work!

I hope that Kara and Bill do include Lee in their next chat. Just to see if Papadama remains blind to his son and pseudo-daughter hooking up.

Hee! This is my favorite bit. Forget Lee, you've got Adama and Kara's relationship down perfectly :)
