Last night I stayed up later than I meant to, writing a letter for my mother. She becomes fidgety when she doesn't hear from me in a while, convinced that she's lost her son to the sins of modern society ( Read more... )

I am fine, Evan, thank you.

And I'm very glad to see that you've come to your senses.

Just fine? Someone of your beauty and position should be happy, delighted, even, dare I say it, blissful. Is there anything or anybody that upsets you, glacial mistress? Certainly something could be arranged in that case.

I'm very glad, as well. I hope my natural charm wins them all back. What say you?

Blissful. Right.

Oh Evan, I did miss your transparent attempts at flattery.

You've missed a lot in the past year.

It pains me that you call them attempts. I'm very sure I exceed at flattery. I do like to flatter those who deserve it, delicate flower. But, you did say you missed them, so clearly I was doing something right.

I hope I've made your night a little more blissful.

I haven't missed that much. I was merely occupied wallowing in self-pity. And everybody needs lighter conversation in complicated times.

If I knew you were such bosom buddies with my wife, I would have extended an invitation to you sooner, Rosier. The next time you have leave from school, do drop by the Manor at your convenience. I'm sure Narcissa will be thrilled to pieces at seeing one of her old school friends again.

I gladly accept if it's not an inconvenience to you. I love visiting my friends, and making new acquaintances as a result. Hogwarts is enjoyable, but I welcome any change of scenery.

And please, call me Evan. I don't want to be Mr Rosier just yet.

If it was an inconvenience, Evan, I wouldn't have made the offer. The truth is, I'd also like to make your acquaintance. In person, for once, as these books are so impersonal.

I agree. As useful as owls and these journals are for keeping in touch, they can't really replace face-to-face meetings. I know that Mrs Malfoy is awfully busy, but it's sad to realise owls will have to do for now because we can't just go down to the common room like old times. Thank you, you must be a charming and gracious man to open the door to me for your wife's benefit.
