Hello! This is maybe the fastest I've ever seen/read something and then apped, but IT HAD TO HAPPEN, THIS CHARACTER WAS PRACTICALLY WRITTEN FOR ME.

Anyway, spoiler-free rundown: Rey is coming to Fandom pre-canon, as a 15-year-old who was abandoned on a desert planet called Jakku when she was five. She's worked as a scavenger, getting parts from ships and things that were downed onplanet during the war. She's used to being on her own, is good at hand-to-hand combat, and is pretty good at machinery.

That's pretty much all I can say without spoiling it, so if you haven't watched the movie yet, maybe don't click on the cut tags. Spoilers galore.

star wars, now with different canon than you've seen IG before!

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, a whiny farmboy found out he had superpowers and a lot of family drama, and used both those things to defeat an evil Empire. After that, there followed a bunch of books, video games, comic books and cartoons that continued the story of those characters and their families.

And then the franchise got sold to Disney, who decided to make new movies, and a good most of that ceased to be canon, though a surprising lot of things and aspects made their way over. But either way, the galaxy is very different than the one the Star Wars characters in Fandom have been living in.

30 years after the events of Return of the Jedi, Luke's disappeared because an apprentice of his went dark and ruined everything, so he took off. The political state of the galaxy is unclear, but the Empire is now the First Order, complete with a Vader-worshipping henchman in a mask called Kylo Ren, and General Leia leads the Resistance, which seems to be fighting the First Order with permission from the Republic, but not with the permission of the Republic, you know? And given what we know of the timeline this has probably been the status quo for a while. So a stormtrooper named Finn defects from the First Order and lands on a desert world called Jakku, where he meets Rey, who's in possession of a BB8 droid that happens to have a map to Luke. The First Order comes after them, so they steal a certain ship and go looking for the Resistance base, hooking up with Han Solo and Chewbacca and then everything gets terrible and amazing.

Watch it and talk to me about it, omg. If you've already seen it, watch it again.

rey, who you better not call a mary sue

In canon, Rey is a scavenger living on Jakku, living in a downed Imperial walked by herself. She was left there when she was five, and has spent the whole time since then waiting for the day her family would come back for her. The circumstances under which she was left are a mystery, though, and we don't know as of right now who her family is. She picks through destroyed Star Destroyers and the like, looking for parts, which she exchanges for food. She lives a lonely life, wanting to belong and not really connecting with anybody. And then the day comes when she meets BB8 and Finn and ends up finally leaving the planet for the first time, and long story short, it turns out she's Force sensitive. More on that later.

Rey's a good kid. She is above all else an optimist, who at the point of canon I'm taking her from, has been waiting for her family for ten years. (Spoiler: they're not coming.) She carries a bo with her and wastes no time defending herself or others. As a podcast pointed out, a droid she just met tells her some guy stole his master's jacket, and her reaction is to run after that guy and hit him in the face with a stick, and that sums Rey up pretty well. She's very good with machines (uncannily so, though she doesn't seem to have reason to wonder why), a decent pilot who's never gone into space, and if she's in a bind she'll pretty much try the first thing that comes to mind and see what sticks. She's loyal to her friends, doesn't take credit for the awesome stuff she does, and is generally easy to get along with.

She's coming in as a 15-year-old, about four years pre-canon. Physically she's going to end up being 5'7", and is pretty thin (girl doesn't get to eat a lot), and a really quick mover. She's pretty, doesn't wear makeup, and has freckles from a lot of time spent in the sun. Rey also dresses in a Luke-like white/beige-y tunic and capri pants with boots, though all she'll have clotheswise is what she brings with her so she'll probably stick to things that remind her of that. (Thanks for cooperating, current fashion!) She has brown hair that she wears away from her face in this triple knot style, and also she speaks with what sounds like a British accent. I have no idea where she's going to turn out to be from to get that, but let's just go with "sounds British."

powers, aka FORCE SENSITIVES PLEASE READ THIS

So Rey's Force sensitive, and will likely end up being a Jedi by the end of the trilogy. She has no idea at this point, nor does anyone around her. She doesn't seem to be really displaying things, other than an uncanny skill with machines, and maybe a good amount of luck when she tries something on a whim. Everything she does can be explained by considering her lifestyle. Aside from maaaaybe getting a bad feeling about this sometimes, she probably won't be doing anything that would set off anyone's alarms. She also doesn't know much about the previous trilogies. She thinks Luke is a myth, and knows Han and the Falcon but what she knows is again, filtered through where she comes from. Also, there's a decent chance she's part of the Skywalker clan. As we don't know this for sure yet, or know how exactly she'd be part of it, it's best just not to go there for the time being.

However, if you choose to have your character notice that something's up with her, please for the love of god do not tell her. I don't know how canon's going to go, and I'd rather her not end up finding out a huge part of her future arc now.
