Baby steps

The past three months has been nuts. Much to write about, but I'm still trying to loosen Facebook's grip on my brain. I wish I could inspire a mass exodus to Livejournal. I really miss all the posts from the LJ crew of Ye Olden Tymes.

Today was Day Two of getting back into good habits. Easy to beat myself if I don't Do All The Things, particularly since I've got a house to myself. It's hard to get out of my blanket fort after let myself slide into work / eat / self-imposed Facebook purgatory, and the accompanying weight gain, and the fatigue and depression that goes with it. There's also the vulnerabilities inherent in Snowpocalypse 2016, plus I've still got two more red tape hurdles to clear before I'm able to replace the car I totaled before Thanksgiving.

So I remind myself to focus not on the long term, but on meeting the day's goals and keeping them reasonable and bumping them up gradually as I get my mojo back.

I'm realising that making myself get out of bed no later than 7AM is more important than I'd originally thought. To make it more bearable, I crank the space heater in the bathroom. After that it's either 30 cardio hooping plus six minutes of twinhoops ... or shoveling snow. The weather made that decision for me.

Six inches fell last night, and the temperature rose to just above freezing. That made all the formerly powdery snow heavy with water. Perfect for snow balls, but heavy to shovel. I managed to clear the deck (the whole thing, to keep it dry so that it's less likely that Mom will need to repaint it when she gets back in the Spring), and I shoveled the driveway by hand down to the spot where the plow stops just past the mailboxes. I also shoveled around the mail boxes so that the carrier can get to them. The urgency was that it was scheduled to rain today and we're expecting the temperatures to drop into the teens at the end of the week, so it's either shovel now or cut through a glacier to get out of the driveway tomorrow. I'm glad I got out there right away, since it started raining lightly just before I finished, though it didn't rain very long. It also snowed a tiny bit, but for the first time since Thursday there was no new accumulation. The deck is mostly dry. I've got a bag of snow melt that's safe for plants and pets on standby and two bags of kitty litter to keep in the car to throw down for traction.

I brought Paul some deviled eggs and crockpot beef stew that I made last night as a thank-you for snow-blowing my driveway three days in a row. I think I gave him the right amount that he'd accept it. Enough for 2-3 hearty meals. We exchanged emails so I can communicate without intruding on his personal space. I know a fellow introvert when I see one. He's a retired engineer and is starting to think about moving to a climate that's less of a pain in the ass.

I hooped twice yesterday and today as well, and managed to drink 16 ounces of water a day, and have done a post each day. Just two days, but it's a start.
