My roommate's mom was in town from Vancouver and stayed with us for a few days. My roommate (and thus her mother) is Chinese. Mrs. K cooked for us and cleaned. I ate well last night. No one has ever made a home made Chinese meal in my home and the only other home made Chinese food I've had is from a former co-worker who used to make rice paper rolls and bring them to the office for potlucks and Christmas parties. There was soup (chicken and vegetable based), a dish of soft tofu, vegetables and chicken (or maybe it was duck), a plate of crispy duck and rice. I can't place the vegetable-tofu-poultry dish but it tastes like something I've had before. The night before she made hot and sour soup.
Mrs. K is a very neat lady. I was told that she doesn't speak or understand much English and will probably keep to herself, and yet she seems to understand fine. Yesterday as I leaned back with a full stomach1 after digging into my bowls of food, she heard me say something about not going to the gym last night2. Imagine a thick Chinese accent says, "You skinny, you don't need to- just like my Cathy."
Mrs. K. is coming back in a few days after she does some touring, then she heads back home. I will clear out some space in the fridge for her. I will drink beer to free up space.
1 Oddly, an hour later I WAS ready for seconds. Less than an hour.
2Worked through lunch, then until 5:30, killing my plan to come home early, grab a bite to eat and my gym clothes, then leave. Coming home starving at 5:30 does not work well for gym time, because working out and eating too close to bed time isn't good and when that hungry, so small nosh will do. I got to the gym today. First time since July, which was the first time since the end of May. I feel like I will be very sore tomorrow.
