Beyond the Rift: It was a preface to motion, rolling down the Oklahoma highway...

A bus from the Conrad hotel is currently rolling south down I-55, toward Oklahoma. Which is the most logical place for a bus from a hotel in Chicago, right? Loaded onto the bus are a couple ancient and forever boys, a Time Lady, a couple doctors, and a couple guardian angels who really didn't have any choice in the matter (one of those people was ( Read more... )

Des is under the firm impression that he could have driven. No. Really. He could have totally driven. After all, he used to drive cross country all the time in his own world, but somehow no one really felt that 'tiny sports car' translates the same as 'giant bus' on the road (also Des might take shortcuts that do not actually exist in this world and that would be bad) and so Des is currently sleeping away his own Ancient-and-Forever-I-Could-Have-Drove sulk in a seat somewhere in the middle of the bus... Actually, he's sprawled across two seats, because his legs are resting in the seat across from him so anyone who wants to get from one section of the bus to the other is going to have to step over his legs.

Why Des chose seats in the middle of the bus is beyond anyone. This is just what Des does- be completely illogical and slightly annoying.

Martha is allowed to drive, of course, but she's not going to drive the entire way there on her own. So she's on one of her breaks from driving and trying to get from the front of the bus to the back of the bus, but Des' legs prove quite the obstacle.

She has to decide if she wants to go over or under them, because she is tiny and going over things is difficult. Martha doesn't want to wake him up, because he needs his sleep and she's trying to be a good girlfriend after telling both of her boys that they weren't allowed to drive and making them sulk.

However, this attempt is not going well. Martha tries to stretch her leg up over Des' legs and trips over them, twisting around and landing sideways in the aisle way with a squeaky yelp.

"Ow," she says, making a face on the floor of the bus, her legs still twisted up with Des' a bit. "...that was dumb."

And Des, being the light sleeper than he is grunts and wakes. He attempts to pull his legs off the other seat and finds this to be a rather difficult endeavor and rather than sitting up and seeing what's happening here, he pokes his head under the seat so he can see Martha's head in the aisle.

"You know, Martha Jones, you could have told me to move," he grins, teasingly.

"I was trying to be nice and not interrupt your beauty sleep, Des," Martha says, eyebrows raised for emphasis at him from under the seat as she starts to smile despite her very valiant attempt at acting as if this is a serious issue (it is hard to have serious issue conversations when talking under bus seats). "But don't worry. I'll never be nice, again. Not even a little bit."

She rests her head against the aisle and she stares up at the ceiling of the bus.

"Y'know, it's really not so uncomfortable down here. Not nearly as much as you'd think, and you're trapped this way," (yes, trapped by her legs of tangled doom, right) she says. "It's a bonus. Somehow."

Martha Jones does a lot of driving during this trip. She loves to drive. She especially loves driving giant vehicles like buses and trains. Not that she's ever gotten to drive a train, but... some day she hopes to. Instead of collecting dolls as a kid, she collected model trains and toy automobiles.

Anyway, she is up front for a good portion of the journey, driving and up to having conversations.

Grace isn't about to offer to drive. She's okay driving cars, but even her dad's SUV used to make her edgy when she got behind the wheel, and no way in hell is she going to drive a giant metal box full of her friends at 80 miles per hour down the interstate. She'll just... hang around and let the people who are actually confident in their driving do that.

She flops into the seat furthest to the front, leaning forward against the divider between the seat and the stairs down to the door. "You don't mind company up here, do you?"

Martha glances and smiles at Grace when she flops down. It has slowly become easier to disassociate Grace from Tish. It's almost a little frightening to realize how very little she thinks of her family anymore.

"Not at all," she says. "Driving gets a bit boring after awhile without comp- Oi! Get on your side of the road, wanker!" Martha smiles all apologetically. "Well. Not too boring with idiots like that on the road. And anyway, how are you?"

Grace snorts a little as Martha starts shouting at the cars, and rests her chin on her arms. "Well, if it's any consolation, you can totally run him down. We've got so much more momentum, they don't stand a chance. ...Not that I'm suggesting vehicular homicide or anything." Of course not. That would be wrong.

"I'm alright." She shrugs. "A little nervous. I mean, it's good that we're going, I just... You know. Des." He has a habit. Of getting into trouble. Not nearly as much as the Doctor, but here they're practically going in asking for trouble, and God, she's nervous.

Martha eventually makes it to the back of the bus, because she's Martha Jones and not even Des' legs or unexpected turns in the road can stop her from her goal. Right. She climbs into the seat immediately in front of the Doctor, gets on her knees, and then puts her hands on the back of the seat and places her chin on her hands so she can look at him properly.

"Having fun back here?"

The Doctor glances over at her, for a moment seems to debate whether he wants to smile at her or continue sulking. Grinning wins out, as he shifts around a little in his seat, turning to face her. Though he can't help but comment - not really sulky, though he'd like you to believe he is - "I really could have driven, you know. A bus isn't so complicated compared to a TARDIS."

Martha rolls her eyes at him.

"Yes, yes, I'm quite sure you could have, but I just... figured you needed space and all of your thinking and ability to be put into making brilliant plans of rescue and... things." Martha is sometimes nice and humors her boys even though it's quite obvious she's only humoring them, which... sort of defeats the niceness of it. "I was only being thoughtful when I said you were absolutely under no circumstances allowed to take the wheel of this bus."

The Doctor rolls his eyes a little, and now he might be pouting a little. Just, you know, a little. "This is for my benefit, then? Because you didn't have to do that. I'm very clever, I think I can manage driving and thinking at the same time." He shifts a little, back into the seat, setting his feet against the back of the seat in front of him - which is also the one Martha's leaning against.

"I think you're more concerned I'm going to drive us off a cliff. If it helps, there are no cliffs in Oklahoma."

Charlie, for his part, is stretched out in back a little ways away from the Doctor, eyes closed, communing with his iPod. His head's nodding to the music, fingers tapping, and yes, he would be dancing if he wasn't on a moving bus. As it is, the music's loud enough that anyone within a few seats of him enough can hear.

Just to top it off, he's singing softly, barely audible. "I never really knew that she could dance like this; she makes a man want to speak Spanish; como se llama, bonita, mi casa, su casa..."

He really is trying to keep from bothering anyone else, but if someone should wander in his general direction...

"Didn't think that was your style," Donna comments with a grin, sitting down a row ahead of him. "D'you put on a wig and heels and perform that when you work?"

At least she didn't ask him if his hips lie.

Charlie raises an eyebrow. "Try finding music that's not my style." There's the slightest hint of a grin hovering around the corners of his mouth as he holds up the iPod, revealing a playlist that, in addition to the Shakira song, features industrial metal, synthpop, country, grunge... And those are just the few songs visible. "And do I look like someone that should be wearing heels? Ever?"

"If you really wanted the rest of the world to feel diminutive," she points out, and steals the iPod to scroll through the music on there. "Oooo, I love this one!" she says stopping on a Scissor Sisters song, and stealing one of his ear buds. No, she doesn't ask.

And don't tell the Doctor. He would twitch mightily.
