i'm doing some reading about the renaissance for one of my classes, and in the reading one of the passages discusses the widespread witch hunts. i got to thinking, and came to two conclusions. one: that the witch hunts were based solely on society's fear. and two: that the witch hunts were nothing short of idiotic (let's kill someone because they are a witch, yadda yadda yadda). so now, fast forward hundreds of years, and here we have people sitting in the white house and Congress creating all of these anti-terrorist laws because of fear. we must guarantee complete safety, and do anything (even violate privacy) in order to guarantee that safety to our society. but wasn't that exactly what the witch hunts were doing? trying to keep the people safe? when will people learn that taking away people's freedoms because of fear is lunacy? witch hunts don't really have a good connotation in my book, so i think we should stop acting in a cimiliar manner and stop giving in to fear.
