Have you ever noticed...

... that some great tv shows have a common thread of immediately killing off the father figure?

I pretty much stopped watching TV in the end of 2005. This was largely owing to my ex moving out of my house and taking the only working TV (it was his, so this was legit.) It was a month or more before I got a TV off CL and barely watched it at all, as I only watched Netflix, and did so on my computer. So the only tv shows I'm hip to are those that have seasons available on DVD, and I'm not a big fan of many. However let us note:

Six Feet Under: the dad dies in the first episode. killed while driving their hearse. very dramatic.
Brothers and Sisters: dad has heart attack, falls into swimming pool. again, great exit.
Weeds: The dad is dead when the show starts, or so I recall.

Now I have to wonder if this is some movement in modern sit-dramedy to show strong women raising their families without a man around. But honestly, I don't like the moms in any of these shows except Weeds. I find Sally Field and whatever the red-haired lady's name is in SFU totally annoying. Also, all of these women/families are plagued/haunted in some way by their husbands legacies. I have to wonder about this and if this is just a coincidence or if the writers have some kind of weird family values/anti-man thing going on. Hmmm.

I really wish these shows would come on DVD sooner.
