Ye Olde Secluded Corner of the Beach: Saturday Evening

Sep 05, 2009 17:46

Celebrating the first week of classes by hitting the beach before it got cold totally required an entire picnic basket worth of food, two bottles of sunscreen, a blanket, towels, several sorts of castle-building tools and a small bag from Turtle and Canary containing as-yet-unrevealed ...stuff.

It did.

Francine was an expert in packing for the ( Read more... )

"I don't think we'll need the sunscreen at night," Merlin chided. Because he was dim on the effects of sun on pasty Irish British skin still somehow.

"You never know." He... was probably right, but this was Fandom, and he was Merlin. He could find a sunburn lurking behind the couch. Francine dropped bags on the sand and set about spreading out the blanket. "The island could move and we could wake up in Antarctica."

...okay, that was possible. But only because said sunburn would sneak up on him like a mugger.

"Where's that?" Merlin asked, reaching down to help with the blanket.

"The bottom of the planet. The daylight's all different down there."

"Right. Remind me to never visit then."

"You could visit when it's dark all the time." Francine dropped down to sit cross-legged on one corner of the blanket, and tugged at the strap of her swimsuit. It was the least boobtastic one she had, but it still sort of made her self-conscious now. "But it'd be cold."

Plopping down next to her, Merlin pondered that. "Perhaps if we brought blankets?"

"And coats. There's penguins there though. You'd like them." Before he could ask that one, she added, "They're birds that can't fly. They use their wings to swim instead."

"..." Merlin closed his mouth, accepting that explanation as... odd but probably true. "Right. We're not going there then."

Francine eyed him with a grin. "We could just see penguins at the zoo."

"Could we?"

"On the mainland. I don't think Fandom has one." Oh, oh how wrong you are, Francine. But you wouldn't find anything resembling a normal penguin there.

"That would be fun," Merlin agreed, oblivious to the freakish animals that may exist on island. "You'd have to tell me what are if we go."

"Of course!" Because Francine would totally recognize the animals beyond monkey, lion, elephant, giraffe... On the other hand, Francine could totally read the little plaques next to the animal environments. "I think it might be weird to go look at the wolves and the jaguars now, though."

Merlin nodded quickly in agreement. "Perhaps just sticking to animals that didn't... talk."

Sure it was through Firekeeper, but still.

"Firekeeper says they're different - like Esh--" Okay, she still had to take this one slowly. "Eshinarvash is like Blind Seer, not like Smudge." Francine kicked her sandals off and rested her hands om her knees. "It makes me wonder if we've got smart animals like that here, though, and we just dn't know."
