Personality
Murdock is, in a word, incorrigible. He has the contradictory nature of being single-minded in his pursuits, while simultaneously having the attention span of a hummingbird. His mind tends to move a mile a minute, with his mouth only a step behind. He talks fast and thinks faster, though is horribly disorganized and liable to forget about something he was decrying as his life goal mere moments before. He is in staunch opposition to any and all things serious, and will do anything in his power to lighten up or distract from a somber situation or topic.
Despite all of his energy, Murdock is professionally lazy. It isn't so much that he hates work, as he hates monotony and convention. He craves wealth, success, and all the easy riches his predecessor gained, but he wants to do just as little work to acquire them. He is constantly cooking up, or falling for, harebrained get-rich-quick schemes in his efforts to find a shortcut to success. Although he suffers this aversion to honest work, Murdock is not necessarily an amoral man; he has an almost childlike, if vague, moral center and rarely looks for means outside the law in his endeavors. He is, however, a bit too trusting and easily distracted from details, and thus often ends up inadvertently getting himself involved in trouble.
Incapable of commitment, Murdock is nonetheless a chronic philanderer. Women are a crippling weakness, and he can't resist the opportunity to flirt, flatter or generally woo. This characteristic also tends to get him into trouble, especially when combined with his greatest flaw of all: Murdock is a pathological liar. For reasons he doesn't understand in the least, Murdock is constantly succumbing to the impulse to exaggerate or outright lie in nearly any situation. He does so without a hint of guilt, and often concocts so many conflicting stories that even he can't recall which are true and which are false.
History
Murdock Albert Varletti was born to a Scottish mother and an Italian father in the small Wyoming town of Green River. Green River itself was a quiet, peaceful place where nothing too much happened on a regular basis, and the citizens were pretty durn content with that fact. Murdock was mad with boredom pretty much from the moment his developing mind could register the concept.
In fact, Murdock himself was probably the most activity to strike Green River in a long time, and this did not go over particularly well with the locals. Murdock was a bundle of irrepressible energy from the moment he could move by his own power, and spent every waking moment he could getting into some precarious trouble or another. He had an insatiable curiosity and wanted to try everything, though would often get bored with an experience immediately and move on to the next shiny distraction.
Murdock's parents were understandably dismayed, though ultimately patient with their son. He grew bored of school immediately and suffered poor grades, though did manage to scrape by. Their insistence that he get a part-time job to occupy his time was briefly entertained by our wayward hero, but immediately dismissed for the agonizingly slow rate at which any rewards were accumulated. He felt a strange entitlement to much faster results, and set about trying to find other ways to get fast money. This, of course, led to further mischief, and further dismayed parents.
Discontent with the humdrum existence of small-town life, Murdock was prone to exaggeration and flights of fancy. While he would occasionally sucker people into believing his tall tales, it was general policy to disregard anything the Varletti boy tried to tell you. In particular he would often come up with far more exotic origins for himself, though none were quite as abstract as when he found himself claiming to be the reincarnation of the Arabic folk hero Aladdin, surprising even himself.
Murdock was oddly disquieted by this bizarre yarn, given that he seemed to have actually managed to convince himself of its truth. He was admittedly enticed by the fact that it actually proved he was more interesting than some small-town boy, and thus was actually grateful when the Atheneum Librarian came to him to explain his nature.
This, of course, was enough of a sign for Murdock that he was destined for greater things. Aladdin had been given riches and powers beyond his wildest dreams without having to work a day for it, and Murdock suspected there had to be a way for this fate to play out in his current existence. He accepted the invitation to the Pentamerone eagerly and set off for New York to make his fortune, his fame, and so forth.
He settled into a room at the Pentamerone, and despite constant boasts of penthouses and excessive riches, he barely ever seemed to have an actual penny to his name. Out of necessity and Atheneum urging he made constant efforts at basic jobs to make ends meet, but never managed to hold anything down for too long, since the bulk of his attention went into finding that big payoff just waiting for him out there, somewhere...
