“Wait, hang on, is that a cat?”

The Doctor poked his head up from underneath the glass console, looking at Amy with a look of pure confusion. His eyes moved to where she was pointing. Oh. Oh! Yes, his feline friend. The one that helped him spy when he was in Craig’s flat. With a smile he held out his hand and the cat came automatically, rubbing up against his head with a purr.

“No, Doctor, seriously. Is that a cat?”

“Well, obviously. It isn’t a dog.” the Doctor looked up at her with a grin. “Must have stowed away on board when you went to drop off that note in the window. Now, then, I’ve told you once,” he directed his attention to the animal. “You can’t just go about getting onto people’s ships. It’s very dangerous.”

“You’re talking to a cat.”

“They are intelligent, Amy, don’t insult him.” He picked the cat up into his arms. “Animals know about things before even you humans do. Alien invasions, movements of the Earth, weather patterns, well, everything! He helped save your life and the TARDIS. Say thank you.”

Amy leaned back as the cat was practically shoved into her face. She eyed the animal, puckering her lips together. “You can’t be serious.”

“I am completely serious. More serious than you know.” the Doctor said.

Amy sighed and leaned forward, placing her head against the cat’s. The cat purred, nuzzling his face into her own. Amy laughed at how much it tickled. She couldn’t help herself as she reached up and scratched behind his ears. He purred louder, tail swishing happily.

She looked up at the Doctor. He had a gentle smile on his face, watching thee two. His eyes met hers and his smile grew just a bit. One of the subtle movements in his face that she had learned spoke more volumes than anything else. The cat turned his head to look up at the Doctor, letting out a soft mew.

“And I think he’s hungry. Come along then, Gerald. There’s some cat food in the cabinet.”

“Gerald… you can’t be serious about naming and keeping the cat!”

“Who said anything about naming? That’s his name. It’s always been Gerald.” the Doctor turned and walked back into the TARDIS. “And, you ought to know, Amy Pond! You never keep the cat. The cat, always, always, keeps you.”

Amy leaned against the console, watching as the tweed wearing alien disappear into the depths of the ship. She tapped her fingers on the glass before shaking her head. “Gerald is not a name for a cat.”
