[stardust] ❝ oh darling understand, that everything everything ends. ❞

To say it hurt was the largest understatement in the history of forever. Or, what was left of history and forever. Given it was just Earth and even then it had only minutes left wasn't saying much. Everything had been destroyed, blinked out, just like Gallifrey was. His TARDIS was gone, a burning light in the sky. Possibly the only thing he had left in the entire universe - what was left of it.

He nodded weakly to River and watched as she went. His head lowered as he forced his body to go on. It wasn't the fact that one of his hearts wasn't beating, it was dead. Only one heart working and his body felt like led, and it was shutting down on itself. If the Dalek had shot the other heart, he'd be a goner. He supposed he was lucky that it only had the brains to hit one of his hearts. He had enough left to pilot the Pandorica into the explosion of the TARDIS and effectively reboot the universe.

At the cost of himself.

Well, wasn't that just fitting? First he had to destroy his entire race. His planet. Now he had to destroy himself. Somehow it was irony - or maybe that was the taste of iron in his blood from his bleeding lip. Either way he was certain that some higher being was laughing at his pitiful attempts to save the universe over and over. And, for once, it seemed like this was going to be the last time he would.

The Doctor lifted his head when he heard Amy walking up to the Pandorica. He told River he wanted to talk to her. He had held River's hand, tried to comfort her, offer her something to help her that he knew he didn't have yet. Or never have. It was hard to see that River would be in that Library now. She wouldn't be there. She'd die somewhere else because he would never exist. Blimey, that was humbling.

He smiled at Amy. It was a weak, tired, and very old smile. But, then again, by now she already knew what that smile meant.
