The mission statement of the Girls Only Club is to overcome the notion that -- a la Paula Vogel -- "As long as men are of two minds but only one member, there can never be true friendship between women."
Meaning women always have their own, seperate secret selves with the unconsious motive of being the most desirable woman. I kind of want us to break past the barrier to that secret self and build really deep and meaningful relationships between all of the wonderful fucking amazing incredible girls I know, and hopefully they will last a long time, and result in making a lot of us happy sometimes, and in a lot of good things being said and done.
The first official girls only club meeting was November 16. Myself, Sophia Yeung, Kate Matthews, Katie Coia, Erin and Kelly Lanzendorfer and Adrienne Rozzi made lists titled, "I want:" and we each filled a page or two with things that we would like to do, places we would like to go, things that we would like to happen or be true or exist. It should be noted that upon being handed a piece of paper, Sophia said, "A list of things I want? I need more paper."
Eventually, I'm going to hound everyone into making their own list so I can compile them into a book, and give everyone a copy. There are a ton of reasons to do this: making the list itself will make you happy; it's a great way for everyone to get to know people they've never met; AND the idea is that if we all know what the others want, and we are ever in a position to make one of those things happen or even easier to do, we can help each other make those things realities for eachother. Awesome, right?
The night before the official first meeting, Kelly Lanzenforfer, Emmy Volkar, and Kendra Sledzinski joined the group.
Other confirmed members: Maria Tyger, Katie Rhodes, Alex Tanner, Jenny, and Sarah Pink.
People I hope will join: Emmy Novak, Erica Sherry, Elizabeth Griffith, Kayla Eckenrode, Olivia Locher, and Taryn, Mallory Winn, Bridget Loeper, Becky Dugan, AnuPriya Tuli, Jamie Keafer, Sara Kantner, and TANYA, allison lanzendorfer, and cara lanzendorfer.
I think once a month I'm going to match each girl up with someone else they don't know to send things to each other. A mix cd for Christmas in Decmeber; a letter about herself and things that she likes to do in January; handmade paper dolls with clothes in February. I'll even send everyone the names of their matches through real mail to make sure they do it for real.
I'll make a tiny photocopied address book of all the members' addresses, and give each member one. So if someone has a zine they'd like to send out (cough cough) they can send it to every girl in the girls club and they will all love it. Or a good set of photos, or a short story. Hell, we can even compile art and stories that members do into a package and send it to everyone. Even Kayla Grasser in New York and Roxanne in France and Taryn in Philly.
I can really throw myself into a project, and I think this one is great.
