Now that Allegra is an over-the-counter medication I switched to it from Zyrtec to see how it works for my allergies. Zyrtec has hair loss and weight gain as a common side effect on sites like askapatient.com but no one reports hair loss as a side effect from Allegra for some reason. I wonder if allergy shots are covered for people with good health insurance??? Of course my insurance doesn't cover it.
Anyway, since I've been on Allegra the only change I've noticed is that I get full now! A few months ago I was telling my boyfriend I don't remember the last time I actually felt full. I have to count calories and try to stop myself from eating because I never feel full after eating, even if it's a big meal. I know antihistamines mess with your appetite, and in an article I read last night, it said the average person on Claritin, Zyrtec, or Allegra weighs 10 pounds more than someone not on one of those drugs. Anyway, I am enjoying feeling full! Nothing is worse than being hungry 24/7. Also, I have been better at abstaining from dessert. On Zyrtec I was obsessed with desserts and it was always a struggle to not eat them. Now I can go days without a craving.
I try to take only 1/2 a pill every other day (plus nasal spray, plus nettle extract), but now that ragweed season is here I'm dying. I need to look into the cost of sublingual allergy drops since shots like $10k! I also read that greek yogurt blocks histamines somehow. I hate greek yogurt but will eat anything if it means less allergy pills.
