[Generalities] Film

Recommend me a film. I own somewhere in the four-digits of DVDs but I'm running out of good movies to watch (or that I haven't seen so many times I can quote them). So. Recommend me a film.

This was a Japanese movie to begin with? That sounds exciting.

Shall We Dance was indeed originally a Japanese film, but having seen them both, I actually recommended each of them independently of each other. There are things about the original Japanese version which are so rooted to the cultural context in which it was made, they don't translate at all. The American re-make uses the same series of events to tell a story which it then roots in its own cultural context of middle class America. The end result is different pictures, in the same frame.

1. Own and *adore*.
2. Still need to see this!
3. I love this movie.
4. No idea. Blurb?
5. I also love this movie.
6-10. Never heard of any of these!

Departures - Japanese film about a cellular whose orchestra disbands and he ends up taking an unusual and secret job. Heartwarming, heart-breaking, and just beautiful.

Shall We Dance? - Better than the J. Lo and Richard Gere atrocity.

Love My Life - Japanese lesbian film.

Friendly Persuasion - Anthony Perkins and lots of other great actors playing Quakers in the time of the USA civil war.

The Mystery of Rampo - Legendary mystery novelist's Edogawa Rampo's reality begins to blur when a murder is identical to his novels.

The Searchers - John Wayne plays a bad guy, or something like it.

Swing Kids - Christian Bale, Robert Sean Leonard, and many others play German teens who love swing dancing in WW II...suicide, Nazis, and loads of awesome drama.

I've actually never branched into Japanese cinema (beyond some horror films, iirc). This is a pretty cool opportunity. If you had to pick one for me to start with what would you choose?

Departures or Shall We Dance. One is drama, the other comedy.
