Halfway across the country

A few days ago I started across the country on a 1985 VT500, a small 500 cc Honda Shadow motorcycle. Due to the condition of the bike, I really didn't know if it was going to make it. So far it has.

I'm writing this from Denver, Colorado. I've dodged all the snowstorms and I'm waiting for the mountain passes to open up tomorrow afternoon. Day One saw me to Des Moines, Iowa. Day Two saw me from Des Moines to Denver. I'm planning on making it all the way to the ocean - to San Francisco, California. Who knows what Day Three will hold?

So far this trip: incredible headwinds causing up to a 20 mpg drop in mileage; learned my electric jacket has corroded connectors and does not work (currently being fixed); learned a Honda Shadow can go several hundred miles when it's below freezing; had a tumbleweed blow past me; 85 degree weather and freeing rain in the same day; and was surprised by the lack of pain or discomfort I've encountered.

So far, it's been a great trip.
