Checkmark by relay for life!!!
which was awesomely intense, going around the track so many times you just lose count, probably walked around 15-20 miles, which is a lot, yes. My knees officially hate me, especially a tendon behind my right knee cap that is forming a political coup with my shins and ankles. Communist revolution within my legs
and my bike
becuase I found a 5" gash in my rear tire when I went to get my sleeping bag so a fifteen minute bikeride turned into an hour walk home plus a very frustrating hour of wrestling with the chain and the wrenches and the rust and grime that are my gears
but got back just in time for the luminaria, when people solemnly walked a symbolic lap together. THe track was lined with little bags of samd and candles and family members who have dealt with or died from cancer. It's such a widespread disease, it was amazing and very sobering.
It was cool to wake up in the middle of the night and roll over and see the stars and your breath in the air, and then roll back and see the luminarias lighting the track and people still walking, taking shifts. My 'team' took hour shifts which ended up being about ten laps, and some teams ran the whole thing, which I can't even comprehend.
But the best part!
I now have short hair and love rash decisions! And some kid will now have a wig with some of my hair in it. I feel like it's the best thing I've done in a while. I know what it's like to be losing hair, just to be losing it, not to have lost it, and that's really hard. My heart goes out to people who have lost it in earnest, especially children. I'm really counting my blessings right now. It was a good day.
