I've had much of this written for most of the week, I might as well finish it up...
This past weekend, I played my first game of Warmachine/Hordes in months... actually, the first one I've played since the tournament at the Siege of Augusta. It was pretty brutal. Jonathan is fantastic at the game, and considering how much he plays it, I would expect no less. My first turn, I just looked at the board and admitted that I had no idea what I was doing. I felt so disconnected from the game. I had forgotten the stats and abilities of my individual units, the strategies I had employed before, and I had absolutely no idea how to tackle the type of list that Jonathan was bringing. He was gracious enough to give me a lot of instructions, and it really helped me to reacquaint myself with the game and start to wrap my head around a lot of the concepts needed to grasp to play it well. Stuff like judging threat range, calculating the odds of to-hit and when to "boost", and learning the synergies of the units is all super important. It's such a great game, and hopefully I'll be getting to play it more than I have been now that Jonathan and Keith are coming to Firefly more regularly.
Dust Warfare continues to be my gaming meat and mead. It's not easy for a miniatures war game to be a great "jump in and play" game, but Dust Warfare is. Give me 10 minutes and I can have anyone playing Dust Warfare (I know this because I've done it several times). I am now winning most of my games. In fact, in the past two weeks, I've won all of my Dust games. I really like my main 200 point list. It could be better, but I'm just using what I have to work with at the moment, and it's working well for me against the opponents I've been playing, which is mainly still Mike and occasionally Nic. I don't know if Scott is ever going to play Dust with us. I know he wants to, but he's a busy guy, and I haven't seen Nic's friend Dustin in quite a while. I am anxious to play other people. I want to know how well I do. Can't wait 'till the next Siege of Augusta.
This past weekend I received an invite to the Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn beta. Not sure if I mentioned it here or not, but before they shut down FFXIV for the relaunch, I started playing it and like it alright. It was as bad as everyone complained about when the game launched, but I still didn't feel much connection with the game. With the A Realm Reborn relaunch, I loaded it afternoon when I got back from Firefly and the next thing I knew, it was 4 AM and I had been having a lot of fun. I'm not sure what it is about the game, it all seems fairly straightforward MMO fare, but it was fun. I really enjoyed myself, and I'm really looking forward to the next beta event. Now, the question of if I would pay for a subscription to this game... I'm not so sure about that, but I did really have fun. In a few hours, this weekend's beta test starts up and I'm really looking forward to jumping back in.
In two weeks, I'm starting a family Dungeon Crawl Classics game. I'll be running it and my sister Erin, Lee, my nephews Zach, Chandler, and Drew as well as Drew's girlfriend Kate (who was in the previous DCC game that Nic ran and is in Drew's Call of Cthulhu) are going to be my players. It's a big group, much bigger than I usually like, but I think it'll be fun. I originally thought to run them through the Pathfinder adventure path Rise of the Runelords, and I think I'm still going to do that, but I'm going to pepper in a lot of my own stuff and other adventures. Basically Rise of the Runelords is going to happen, but other stuff is going to be going on at the same time. I'm super excited about it. We're only going to be playing on the first Friday every month, so I'm not going to feel pressured to create content for every week, and I can take my time on it.
Lee and I went over to hang out with her brother Harry tonight and he showed me the trailer for the new MGS game. I thought it looked pretty great. It may be the first Metal Gear game I'm interested in playing since the original MGS.
