I thanked God for you last night, the God you try to believe in, silently but with everything while walking down that shimmering sidewalk and kicking around frozen leaves. An ancient army, ranked and filed, awake and whispering, shot up from the ground and disappeared up up up into the blackness behind us. Crossing north america in a single stride to stand by me; you are from here. Huddled on playground equipment, letting words just fall out of my mouth in puffs of warm air. A daring slide rescue. Give me your hand. We've made it through fall.
My guts hurt.
I haven't laughed so long or hard all year.
