Old favorites (3 pre-series/first season, one future-fic)

Jun 14, 2008 09:51

So when I was thinking about what to rec this week, I decided I'd go back through the hundreds of links I have saved to stories I love, and pick some of my all-time favorites--three pre-series/first season, and one future-fic to cap it off. It was a LOT harder than I thought it would be, but overall, I hope you guys will enjoy these as much as I did.

Pre-Series/First Season:

When Siblings eAttack by Gekizetsu (also known as
eighth_horizon).
Rating: Strong PG-13.
Summary: The real reason Sam doesn't answer the phone when Dean calls.
--This was the first SPN fic I ever read, and I still giggle everytime I think about it. I always wondered if the boys talked at all after Sam left for Stanford....and hahaha, this suggests that, in their own way, they did. It's hilarious, extremely in-character, and set pre-series. All in all, definitely worth a read (or a second, or a third for that matter).

Like Blood and Fire by
penny_lane_42 (also known as Lirazel).
Rating: PG-13.
Summary: The one time Dean's not on watch, and all hell breaks loose.
--"How Sammy Breaks the News About Stanford" stories have never been my favorite simply because they're so painful, but oh, this one. It's so lovely--definitely my favorite version of events--and the characterization is absolutely spot-on.
penny_lane_42 is a master at examining how the boys' minds tic, and her writing is both accesible and rich. This story makes me tear up every single time.

Interesting Times by
trollprincess.
Rating: R.
Summary: Dean doesn't even think about the curse until the next morning, and by then it's too late. (Set in season one.)
--This is one of those fics that just sticks with you. I read this a few months after I'd gotten into SPN fandom, and was blown away by it--since then, I've read it about twenty times. It's haunting, and the twist is just too perfect--it really makes you think. As per usual with
trollprincess, the writing is incredible, the characterization is flawless, and the plot is fascinating.

Future Fic:
Paradigm Shift by
lyra_wing
Rating: PG
Summary: Future-fic, about 10 years into the future. Spoilers up to "Nightshifter."
--This is how the boys should have cleared their names.  Frankly, it is made of awesome, and one of the most creative plot devices I've ever seen in SPN fic.
lyra_wing has also written a prequel and a sequel to this, which are both equally as fantastic (and the reason why I'm only reccing one future fic).
