Riverchase Middle School student Brendan Willis died after a playmate shot him with a pellet gun on Saturday.
The 12-year-old Helena boy was visiting the home of his father in Pinson when the shooting occurred.
According to media reports, Willis got his father's Daisy pellet gun from the garage.
Jefferson County police officials have said he retrieved pellets that were stored in a separate location and loaded the gun.
After pumping the gun seven times, he handed it to a 9-year-old boy and told him to shoot, apparently believing the Under Armour T-shirt he was wearing would protect him, police officials have said.
Under Armour is a popular athletic clothing manufacturer. According to the company's website, the line of moisture wicking microfiber clothing pulls perspiration away from the skin to keep athletes cool, dry and light during a game, practice or workout.
The 9-year-old shot Willis from about 10 feet way, hitting him in the center of the chest. The pellet pierced his heart and lodged near his spine.
Willis died later during surgery.
