Summary: The night begins in a bar, transitions to a bus, and there's no telling where it could end.

After the thong challenge and the unceremonious release of Cole (which Taub felt sorry about because Cole was a decent guy), Taub invited Amber out for drinks and Amber accepted.

It was some stingy little bar in Princeton, there were quite a few, surprisingly.

Amber ordered a cosmopolitan and Taub just got a beer.

“That was close,” Amber said after two cosmos. “Really close.”

He agreed.

“I wouldn’t mind seeing Kutner get the ax though,” she said thoughtfully.

“Why? Kutner’s a decent guy.”

“It’s a competition, Taub-” Vaguely, Taub thought it was sort of funny that he was always Taub, never Chris, and she was always Amber, never Volakis. It was notable, though it hardly held significance. “You can’t make friends.”

The irony of that statement made him chuckle.

She ignored it. “And Kutner’s…well, I can feasibly see House hiring him now.”

“He’s a bit overenthusiastic.”

“He’s dangerous.”

He agreed, though didn’t say anything. Kutner kind of struck him as a kid brother, the kind that sneaked into your room and stole your porn stash, or blamed the last piece of cake’s mysterious disappearance on you, even though he had chocolate stains on his mouth.

Taub was thankful for being an only child.

Four cosmos and six beers later, both Taub and Amber were without their keys, and stumbling onto the city bus.

“What time is it?” he asked her, yawning.

He had told his wife he was pulling an all-nighter at work (and hopefully once he actually had the job he’d never have to do it again) so he didn’t even know why he was asking.

“Like one in the morning.”

They sat together at the back of the bus, and it was kind of a long ride to Amber’s apartment. They didn’t really talk.

About ten minutes into the trip, Amber was slumped down in her seat and leaning onto Taub’s shoulder for support.

“This is unusual.”

“What’s so unusual about this?” Amber yawned. “I’m a horrible cruel little girl and you’re-” she yawned again. “A very charming scumbag.”

He agreed.

She looked up at him and he was inexplicably reminded of House with those eerie blue eyes.

Taub kissed her anyway.
