A bag for your purchased items is a convenience, not a requirement. Many stores now offer a variety of bags that can be bought to hold your purchases and even allow more exception to the kinds of bags that you can bring into the store.
So when asked if you would like a bag while going through the check lanes don't huff and whine about having to throw down a nickel for the cheapest bag available. That just makes you look like an idiot as you load up your arms with items and waddle to the door because you didn't have the forethought to bring something to carry them home in.
Just imagine when they start charging for the use of carts and baskets. Those cost more than bags and are constantly removed from stores, never to be returned.
