Six Years On

The heat is here and it’s real. It’s an ominous, oppressive sauna outside, steaming your flesh and slapping you down. I’m almost always out of Korea in early August, so I’ve forgotten just how goddamn hot it can be. We’re talking Mississippi, Burma... Sierra Leone. Just the slightest exertion causes my shirt to become soaked with perspiration ( Read more... )

I like reading yer shit when I'm drunk. I really love yer depictions of Korean seasons. THEY are a good metaphore for godliness, which is next to cleanliness. Here's an unsolicited plug of my forthcoming book in excerpt. Thank CT

FROM bROAD RAnGE of topics

Mimi worked at Mama Lee’s. Mimi was hot. Mimi was her English name. Mimi was Korean. The first time I entered Mama Lee’s, I sat at the bar and within seconds, Mimi jumped into my lap. Mimi was little. Mimi put her warm lips to my ear.

I’d just entered from the cold night air outside. It was late November. I’d first arrived in Taegu in July. It was hotter and more humid than I’d ever experienced before in my life. Sweat dripped from my face while I walked down the street. I finally understood the meaning of tee shirts - so your outer shirt’s not wet! I’d lived in California my whole life. Then autumn came. The humidity ended in a single day. Three months per season, eh? Total change in weather; that’s some freaky shit. All the leaves changed color, died and fell to the ground. Naked trees as far as the eye can see. It was my first time to spend an entire autumn in a four season locale. SKorea has four distinct seasons that last EXACTLY 3 months each. My first complete winter with snow and ice all that chill was about to begin.

I sat at the bar and took off my dark brown leather bomber jacket that Chepe Escondido’s father had given me in 1992. Mimi’s warmth felt homey. “100,000 won,” Mimi whispered into my ear. “We go in back. You do whatever you want to me. I’m a three holer…JOKE ONLY!” And then laughing softly, Mimi kissed me on the ear, jumped off my lap, and slowly strutted down the bar, a bounce in her step. I couldn’t take my eyes off her and she knew it. Mimi looked at me and smiled, eyed the back room, then smiled to me again.

In America or anywhere else in the world, thus far in my 28 year existence, 11 of them sexually active; until that night, I’d never once paid for the services of a woman. The thought of paying a woman for her ‘time and trouble’ had never seriously crossed my mind. Ever! Until that night…I’d never in my life been propositioned by someone so hot, and in an atmosphere where ‘paying a woman for her time and trouble’ seemed totally hunk dory. I said, “Hey Digdug, you gotta loan me 100,000 won!” To which he replied, “Which one?” I pointed out Mimi and he gave me the money, but not before saying, “You gotta give me details.” Digdug was recently married. Digdug never paid any girl for sex or any sexual favors. Digdug didn’t feel that drinking with bar girls and grabbing a titty or two was cheating either. Digdug and I only ever went out on weeknights as he spent his weekends with his pregnant Korean wife.

Digdug was just under 40; I was closer to 30 than 20 or 40. And judging by looks alone, on a scale of one to ten, Mimi was a 40! I was completely single at the time, with no one in the world around me that I knew well, except Digdug. I didn’t even know Digdug that well. I’d only been in Taegu a few months. It’d be months before I learned that Digdug did 8 months for armed robbery before going to law school. This was Taegu 1996. Winter was upon us. My LA friend Hank Gámes was supposed to be coming out to Taegu in January. Hank was supposed to be bringing Manny Mota with him. Digdug and I were very happy when H.G. arrived.

SHAMELESS PLUGS thanks SHOWBIZ In theory, you CT injected major life into my blog with your plug of my Immaculate Conception blog back on Dec 11, 2008, so for that I'll forever be thankful.

And as a final caveat, I'm back on the PUSAN WEB, the 2nd greatest website in Korea, after Dave's.
