I went to the movies today and saw Zhang Yimou's The Curse of the Golden Flower.
First Impression: wow!
I got serious Gormenghast -vibes from the highly ritualistic lifestyle at the imperial palace. All those thousands of servants doing their minor tasks, the way everything is choreographed and done in order. Zhang Yimou's movies are visually stunning, but this time it was mostly the costumes that caught my eye. OMG, so many details! So many boobs on display! *g*
Second impression: bloody hell!
All that wealth and power seems to lead to tragedy, Greek style. It's Oedipus with a twist and as you can imagine the body count is extremely high. It's husband against wife, brother against brother, father against son with a side dish of incest and gore and betrayal and love.
Yeah, I liked it very much.
Anyway, it's supposed to snow tomorrow morning. Maybe. Yikes!
ETA: I forgot to say that I'm glad Doris Lessing won the Nobel! Yay! I like her!
