Sarah Lawrence had a blackout for a little over 48 hours.
However, it is now over and we can all carry on with our lives. This was a result of the remnants of a tropical storm coming through the area, trees fell everywhere, power lines were knocked out, the Yonkers water treatment plant was inoperable for three days and so we can't drink the water now without boiling it. It's been pretty interesting. Also, we went grocery shopping a few days before the storm, you know that big beginning of the year shopping trip that's always necessary, and then with no power all of our food rotted.
Even more awesome! Our refrigerator smells like sour milk and gym socks or something equally repulsive.
YET, DESPITE all of that, the beginning of the year has been wonderful so far. Seeing all of the old friends, registering for classes and whatnot, I think it will be a good year.
Having no power forced us to be somewhat creative in entertaining ourselves over the past few days. There was the usual partying (just by candle light), but other things as well. For example, the school's answer to us having no power was to hand out shitloads of glowsticks (yes, the essential tool for all ravers and trick or treaters). Security came by each house and left about ten apiece (in the ACs at least). WELL, it took about an hour before those things were all getting broken open and glowing shit splattered all over the walls of common rooms and hallways. Our living room looked like it was orbiting through space, and we all sat around in awe (admittedly substance-enhanced awe, but still) until the glow goo started to fade.
Sorry to those of you who called days ago and I've yet to call back...my phone, like everything else, was dead dead dead.
And now, after the strangest beginning to any school year yet, I'm off to read some passages about activist theater in brazil. And I'll be reading by electric light, no less!
It feels good to be back.
A MESSAGE TO ALEX ALBERS: Your drunk phone call from Sydney made me both happy and sad. (Sad to hear that things there are hard for you, happy to hear your lovelybeautifulpurelyalex voice.) We have dedicated many moments to you in your absence since we got back. These include, but aren't limited to: visiting our tree, listening to very embarrasing michael jackson songs full volume while driving through campus, and taking long walks during the wee hours just for the sake of walking. (This last one, by the way, isn't so popular with most of our remaining mutual friends here, they're more chill, prefer to lounge and whatnot. It takes some coercion to get them to venture out on late night, bleary-eyed, cloudy-headed ventures.) In short, I miss you Alex, we all do.
