I've been really bad at updating lately, and then suddenly I post twice in one day. But I guess I just have things I want to say. So ha.
There are days that I absolutely love new york.
Yesterday was one of those days. My friend Katie was in town from Philly, and so Liz and I went down to union square to meet her. We knew that it was september 11th, but we didn't know exactly how the city was choosing to remember that date until we got there.
It was with music and dance, in essence a huge celebration. Many, many parks in the city were having concerts and performances of sorts, and that was the way that people were choosing to memorialize the people who died. Granted, there was a formal memorial where names were read at the site of the former wtc. However, the most visible signs were from parks, where there was an absolute abundance of music and dancing of all different styles, genres, and origins. Most notable were a Chinese percussion group and some totally phenomenal breakdancers. We ended up getting to see music in a few different parks, and I was very much reminded of something that occasionally slips my mind:
I am incredibly fortunate to be an ethnomusicology student that lives less than a half an hour from manhattan.
During the evening we went to chinatown and had vietnamese food, then headed back to school. Liz and I agreed that it might have been the best day in new york for both of us.
It feels good to be completely happy with the state of my life. Not to say that there aren't areas that could use improvement or change, but happiness can exist in the face of imperfection - and I think it's even possible that happiness can be born of imperfection. At least I hope so.
In any case, I feel good.
