"I am... appalled at the condition of this."

Sam sits on the floor of Mercedes' bedroom and stares at the tattered and warped comic book he holds gingerly in his hands. It almost brings him to tears.

Almost.

"What's wrong? It's just a comic book. My little cousins read them all the time and they left it here when they visited. Their whole collection is like that," Mercedes replies.

He sucks in a breath of air, shocked, not believing how someone could treat such a thing that way. Sam places the comic book gently onto the nightstand and shifts his position so their knees are nearly touching. He leans in, close enough that she can smell his light cologne.

"Mercedes. There are four rules a person who truly respects comic books the way they should be respected always follow. Especially if they're limited edition or very old and still in mint condition."

She raises an eyebrow, but her expression is gentle. (It's hard to be a complete diva around Sam.)

Sam continues. "Number one: always handle them with care. This comic book is a prime example that this rule wasn't followed. Number two: if it's still in it's plastic bag, depending on the age, wear gloves. I always keep a pair of tongs in my desk drawer, just in case it's a really important edition."

"You're kidding, right?" She's not being mean, she honestly doesn't believe him.

His expression is deadly serious. "Never. Joke. About. Comic books." Mercedes chuckles and signals for him to finish.

"Rule number three: food and drinks are a no-no when reading them. I think that one is pretty self explanatory. And rule number four...." A blush covers his pale cheeks and he averts his eyes to the carpet.

"What? Sam, you can tell me. I won't laugh, I promise." Mercedes takes his hand in hers and she squeezes his fingers tenderly. He smiles.

"Rule number four," he says softly, "is that you only show your best comic books to someone who is special to you." Sam reaches into his backpack and pulls out a large ziplock bag with a copy of The Amazing Spiderman comic book enclosed. "It's from 1968. My dad gave it to me on my 8th birthday, saying he got it on his. I've always cherished it because he passed it down to me. I wanted to show it to you because, well, you're special to me." His blush darkens.

Mercedes smiles brightly, leans forward and kisses him sweetly on the cheek. "You're so sweet, Sam. I'd love to look at it with you."

He smiles back, and pulls out two pairs of gloves.
