Vindicated
So, I got my essay on cultural competency back from my professor. I'd gotten a point off for spelling and grammar. It's not that big and normally I would have just shrugged it off. It's not actually going to affect my grade. But then I read through her comments.... I'd missed an e (it said very rather then every, it happens) and one sentence got a ? for sentence structure (I think I was using Quaker language, gotta try not to do that) and she'd added a word as well, thinking I'd missed it.
But the thing is, I was writing about my own development of learning around cultural differences as someone who is first generation American. Talking about my pre-seven year old perspective on life, I wrote, "From my point of view, everyone who hadn't already lived in more then one country, who didn't get Birthday presents in boxes with foreign stamps on them, or Happy and Merry Christmas cards each year was just weird."
She edited it to say "Happy Birthday and Merry Christmas cards."
Normally, I'd just shrug and say sometimes it sucks to have my brain 'cause of all the mistakes it makes, accept I didn't make that third mistake. The point of the sentence was that I got Happy Christmas cards and Merry Christmas cards 'cause my family is in England, and I'd lost a point for my cultural difference. I couldn't let that stand on the CULTURAL COMPETENCY paper. I just couldn't.
So I went back and pointed it out to my prof. I got my point back. I am happy now.
(I've also maid the mental note that it's probably better to break up the familiar phrase and keep the unfamiliar one together in the future... Merry and Happy Christmas cards is probably a clearer way to communicate to and American audience.)
