It's been a long time since I discovered any Harry Potter fanfiction I wholeheartedly enjoyed. After nearly 7 years of reading HP fanfiction, I'm very sensitive to clichées.
"Diagon Burning" by 1 Eyed Jack is utterly brilliant:
- The story starts in August after OotP. (And past OotP fiction is still rare.)
- It has a plot! Actually, the story centers around the plot! (Another rarity in the HP fandom. :-)) And the plot is actually interesting! :-)
- Part of the story will apparently focus on Harry/Draco. And no, the two of them are not already thinking about the other in a romantic way. They are in character, e.g. Harry frequently acts without thinking about the consequences and Draco is a drama queen.
- We get to see Malfoy family interaction - and no, we don't get the clicées of Abusive!Lucius and Abused!Draco. There's Cunning!Lucius instead. All this rounded off by a lovely portrayal of Narcissa.
- Among the cast so far are Hermione, Ron & the Weasley family, the Parkinsons, Fudge, Lupin, McGonagall and Snape. And all of them are perfectly in character!
- Another bonus of this story is it's balance between comedy and tragedy. What happens in the story is serious - still the way the story is written has made me laugh out loud several times.
- The 20 chapters of this story are basically already finished. Every Thursday a chapter gets published. And isn't it ever so nice to know that an HP story will not remain a WiP indefinitely. :-)
