Watching Obama's inauguration. (It's 3am here XDD)
It's sort of bizarre. America...well for a long time it hasn't had a very good image in terms of discrimination, racism and such. And...now they have a black president. It's amazing, and it's also made me think.
Australia ne. No, we never had a civil war. But that was because it was genocide, not war. The Aboriginies never stood a chance- guns against spears, not to mention diseases that they weren't immune to. White people have had such a short history in Australia, but all of it is shameful. Many people don't know alot of what went on in the early stages of settlement, except that we killed, raped and stole their sacred land.
And for 80 years- 80 years- we forcibly removed Aboriginal children from their mothers to raise them up as white people, the plan being that they would marry white people and the Aboriginie would be bred out. There's a true story of two girls who managed to escape and make it back home, only to have their own children stolen years later. It ended in 1970, and only last year did we formally apologise.
So yes, it seems we can crap on about how racist America is, while our own native people don't even live amongst us, living instead as second-rate citizens usually far out from the cities. Maybe one day, just maybe, we'll be at the stage America is now.
Oh look, here's Obama now~ :D
