(no subject)

My wife has a special fondness for the Arthurian myth, and has been urging me for quite a while to paint my personal take on some 'traditional' art subject, be it the Lady of the Lake, Odin with his ravens, Orpheus or what have you.

This summer we went to a historic re-enactment event in an ancient castle not too far from home, it was fantastic, with the people living there taking active part in the event, mingling with visitors and with the musician, performers and medieval-style fighters.
Inside the burgh but ouside the castle proper there were many artisans, carpenters, smiths, a cobbler, a candle-maker, and a scribe, writing calligraphy with a quill. When we arrived at the scribe's desk a boy was here too, entranced, watching him work as if the rest of the world had ceased to exist.

We came home with tons of photos, but that scene in particular struck a chord, it was perfect, just begging to be painted, and the mentor-student undertones made me thing of a young Arthur and a middle-aged Merlin.

And here is the result: The Magic of Writing
