I love this Vox feature with a question of the day. gives you something to write about!
Holiday traditions for my family are varied. My father's family is Lutheran, however we never went to church in my life. On Christmas, we typically would gather at my grandparents' abode, and trade the gifts. The gift giving has gotten out of hand, and now we are trading gift cards (which I think is the lamest thing ever, why bother?). Now that my grandparents are old and feeble, we do not have a tradition. In fact, we do something a little different every year by trading (gift cards) gifts at my aunt's house or my uncle's house. On my husband's side of the family, who is Serbian Orthodox, we do not even celebrate Christmas until Mid January. This is the old calendar of when Christmas originally occurred until the whole world basically adopted the Julian calendar system. Serbs are oldskool with their traditions.
Since I am a mixture of buddhist + christian traditions, I am thinking that next year I am finally going to announce to my family that I am not a god follower. I don't buy into this gift giving tradition, and I don't want to participate in it anymore. However, I do enjoy decorating for the holidays. Does putting a wreath up imply that I'm a christian? I don't think so. But some people might think that...
