just got back from japan. extremely jetlagged. here are some tidbits on tokyo

+ it is trendy to cover your phone not just in plain old swarovski crystals over there, but in realistic plastic macaroons, frosting, donuts, and cookies. i was on the subway staring at this girl's cell phone for 20 minutes because i wondered how she could fit like 5 macaroons on it. in almost every dept store we went into there was a woman at a table demonstrating how to put macaroons on your phone. with frosting, crystals, little strawberries, and glitter on them of course.

+ shoes come in size S M L or LL. guess which one i was? it was not fun shopping for myself. if something fit me i bought it, just on principle lol.

+ girls over there do it up big time. high heels in the rain, full face of foundation and powder on the sweatiest of days, perfectly curled hair. this is an everyday look for every girl there. i saw maybe 5 girls literally in flats the whole 12 days i was there. everyone's hair is dyed various shades of brown. maybe im just lazy but it seems like way too much time and energy wasted to do all that.

+ i never saw groups of girls shopping. i would see a girl shopping by herself, or with her mom. but never in a group of friends like over here, and definitely not with a boyfriend unless they are at the many sex shops. my theory is that girls in japan shop alone so that they can get their hands on the newest trendy item before their friends. as i said before, it is a serious style war over there everyday.

+ pachinko really is as loud and bewildering as it seems in lost in translation. our hotel was was next door to the red light district in shinjuku and every morning i could look out the window and see people lined up for pachinko. like from 8 am til they open at 10. we went into one parlor and besides all the noise from the machines, the loud music, and the many dudes screaming into microphones, it's pretty boring. you stare at a screen. little metal ball bearings fly everywhere. that's it.

+ best thai food outside of thailand i've ever had.

+ also not as clean of a city as you would think it would be.

+ they are still extremely obsessed with evangelion. and so is my husband. and so he was in heaven.

+ there are beautiful, high quality flower shops in every subway station

+ there was a muji and uniqlo store in our hotel. and so i was in heaven.

+ they love crepes. and cafes. and simple syrup instead on sugar.

+ it is like a competition to deliver the best customer service in stores over there. walk in any store, from 7-11 to louis vuitton, and you will be immediately greeted by smiles and screams of welcome in japanese. on our last day i bought 3 pairs of shoes and the saleslady asked me if i wanted the boxes because she saw me with my bulging carryon bag. i said no. she told me to please go sit on the couch and wait for her. she came back in 10 minutes with a reusable shopping bag and each shoe was individually wrapped in thin styrofoam and she tied the bag closed with red ribbon.

+ no matter what the guidebooks say, it is really easy to spend alot of money there, especially on food. the books say you can be cheap by eating from 7-11 and from vending machines. but who goes on vacation to eat cold noodles from a box and sardines and rice in can? our cheapest meal was probably around $50 and that was at a restaurant where you cook your own meat. and that was without ordering drinks.

i should try to sleep
