Dead Horsies
The Calgary Stampede is DAYS away and the city is filling up with tourist. There are bales of hay everywhere and cowboy hats are on sale. The Broncs were scheduled to arrive at the stampede grounds yesterday after being herded from the ranch outside of the city. A two day treck for the cowboys.
They had decided to bring the Broncs to the city the old fashioned way - rounded up and herded through downtown calgary by cowboys instead of bringing them in with trailers.
The last leg of the roundup was over Bow River. A Freight train passed as 200 horses were crossing the bridge. The Broncs got spooked and caused a stampede. 10 horses went over the edge and drowned. 9 horses died and one is still missing. It made the front page of the Calgary Herald today. Pictures of dead horses lying on the grass covered in blue sheets.
