I'm glad that there are people far more eloquent than me that post and speak up about those things.

You know, since I've joined fandom I've become more critical - of myself and others - and less naíve, more educated and less caught up in what I think I know, more self-aware and less self-centered.

Fandom has its ups and downs, wanks and stupidity. That's not unique to fandom, though.
There's also the willingness to interact, to reach beyond your comfort zone, to reach out to strangers, to teach and to listen and to share and to connect, compassionate and helpful and funny and serious, and I myself only found it like this in fandom. Maybe there are other groups this diverse, that broad of a spectrum, that are similar in this regard. I haven't found them yet, though.
