Fortress, by glasslogic
Wow. So, I've been cruising through Supernatural fanfic lately. Been thinking of posting about why I love the show, but just haven't done that yet. Lazy Thad iz lazy! :P
Today, however, I was scanning over the entries in spn_j2_bigbang when I found Fortress, by glasslogic. OMG. If this author didn't reach into my psyche and pull out most of the things I love and put them together in one fic, then this is just a coincidence and I'm amazed.
Solid plot, interesting concept, great world-building, excellent characterization, and snappy dialogue just like it should be for the brothers Winchester. In fact, the concept of the afterlife reminds me somewhat of Waiting for the Galactic Bus, by Parke Godwin. Dean ends up spending thousands of years in Hell and comes back demonic, but Hell isn't all about good and evil and this fic isn't all about how wicked Dean is now. It's about family and brothers; it's about revenge and Apocalypse-stopping plans; it's about learning to live with things you can't change; it's about realizing that maybe these things you can't change aren't all bad because in the long run, they make you who you are.
You guys know I don't often enthuse about sad endings, so the ending is upbeat. It's also Wincest, so you may want to avoid it, but it's not Wincest as in true love for ever and ever and hanging lacy white curtains in the kitchen. It's about power, and blood, and need, and just how far will the brothers Winchester go for each other. To Hell and back is the obvious answer, but somehow this seems like a step beyond that.
I'm a very delicate flower when it comes to the balance of power in a relationship, but this one keeps the line right where I like it. Sam might be in need, but he's not completely under Dean's thumb. Despite Dean's new cosmic powers, he still needs Sam and both boys are strong enough to support the other when needed.
There's clearly another story in the works. This one comes to a solid conclusion, but it's obvious that the next half of the adventure desperately needs to happen. I'll be waiting!
