still waiting...

Well the good news is, Rob has an interview tomorrow with McGraw Hill and they are very interested. Apparently their technology department is growing like crazy and they have a need for experienced photo researchers/editors. The bad news, they've already said that they can't match his old pay. This would not have been a problem if we were still renting but of course now we bought this old house and have a mortgage that was pushing our limit with his old pay. There may be a job opening up in Dulles, VA at AOL but that would mean a move and I'm just not sure what to think of that. Sometimes if I think too much about the whole thing I get panicky and short of breath. I half want to move because I've always loved DC. I have cousins there and Rob's best friends are there. Plus, I would love to teach in the DC schools. Like I told my mom, right now I'm young and idealistic, I'd rather teach where people need me. My old dream was to teach on a rez in South Dakota but I think I'd like a chance at middle schoolers in DC too. I love reading and writing and I do believe it has the ability to transcend class and politics and race to get at the heart of the human experience. There is a passion in good poetry that can reach most everybody, it just takes a good teacher to navigate kids through it and to inspire them. Anyway, lets be honest, I want my summers off so I can take the kids camping.
I finally got my old New Yorkers forwarded to me at my new address. I always thought getting one was intimidating but try getting five at once...ack. But there was a great article on my new passion, graphic novels. It compared graphic novels to beat poetry of the 50's and 60's and spoken word movement of the nineties. It's poetry and images together. The article referenced Chris Ware alot alot and Jimmy Corrigan: The Smartest Kid on Earth which is absolutely one of the best things I've read in years. So sad but so good. I had to read it twice in a row just because I refused to leave his world.
