He was normal. Yamada Ryosuke was nothing special. The only thing that makes him different from everyone else was his class. Somehow, he ended up in the class where the most popular idol was in. And coincidentally, that idol was sitting next to him.
Nakajima Yuto.
“I still don’t understand why Yamada’s in this class. This is a class for idols or important teens like us. What is he?”
“I heard that he came in through a scholarship, so maybe that’s why.”
A sigh escaped the boy’s lips. He was used to all these, since his classmates weren’t sensitive about what they say when it comes to him. Yet they would put up a façade while talking to the other people in class.
Superficial people, was what he thought, before he started to sketch the scenery outside the classroom.
Sound of the chair beside him being pulled out didn’t stop him from his sketch. This is probably the only reason he likes his seat.
It was just beside the window, the perfect place to sketch. Just minus sitting with the most popular idol, his seat was perfect.
“You’re good at drawing Yamada.” He must have zoned off, since he didn’t notice the taller boy leaning in, peering into his sketch book. Out of instinct, Ryosuke edged towards the window, pulling his sketch book closer to his body so Yuto wouldn’t see what he had drawn.
A smile appeared on Yuto’s lips, and he laughed a little. “Yamada, it’s really good. Can’t I see what else you’ve drawn?”
“No Nakajima-san, I’m sorry but I’m not comfortable to show people I’m not close to my drawings.” The taller boy seems a little dejected, but nevertheless, he just nodded before apologizing.
“Hopefully, one day I can be someone that can see what you draw.” Ryosuke was taken aback from the idol’s words, but ignored them later, as the teacher entered the class.

“Yama-chan!” Turning around, Ryosuke spotted his best friend, and he opened up his arms, where Ryutaro just jumped into his arms. “Ryu! It has been so long!” He ruffled the younger boy’s hair, giggling a little as Ryutaro didn’t want to let go of him.
“Why do you have to be so smart and enter a school that I can’t enter?” Although Ryutaro was younger, he was towering Ryosuke already. A pout adorned his lips, and Ryosuke playfully hit him on the forehead. “Let’s go, I have someone that I want you to meet.”
Ryosuke looked at his friend, noting that Ryutaro’s eyes were sparkling more than usual. Someone that Ryutaro wants him to meet huh? A smile crept up his lips as he allowed himself to be pulled along by Ryutaro.

They arrived at a park, where the sakuras blossomed. Unconsciously, Ryosuke touched him sling bag where his sketch book and art materials lies safely in. Coming to a stop, it was than Ryosuke noticed that not much people were around in that part of the park. Signaling to him to be quiet, Ryutaro slowly crept towards two people who had their backs facing them.
A smirk was on Ryutaro’s lips, and quickly, he covered the eyes of one of the person. “Ryutaro?” The person who had his eyes covered didn’t panic.
Instead, a smile grazed his lips, and Ryutaro pouted as he let go. “This isn’t fun.” Ryosuke just laughed mentally at his friend’s childish side, as he felt himself being pulled toward the two people.
“This is Okamoto Keito, the person I want you to meet.” Ryosuke looked at the person who got his eyes covered by Ryutaro. Okamoto Keito, he had heard of him before. He was in the same band as his partner in class, Nakajima Yuto.
Before he could open his mouth to speak, Ryosuke saw a blush tainting Ryutaro’s cheeks. “He’s my boyfriend, that’s why I want you to meet him.”
Without saying anything else, Ryosuke just smiled and nodded at Ryutaro, a sign that says that he is alright with them together. After all, Ryosuke finds that even if Keito was a popular idol, he seems to love Ryutaro a lot. Well, feelings can be seen through other mediums, like the eyes.
He had almost totally forgotten about the other person that was standing beside Keito until Keito spoke up. “Yuto, this is my boyfriend, Morimoto Ryutaro.” Ryosuke stiffened at the name Keito said. It was then that he saw Yuto.
The taller boy ruffled Ryutaro’s hair affectionately, and started to tease Keito, as he told Ryutaro to look out for Keito’s bad points. Somehow, Ryosuke saw Ryutaro naturally opening up to Yuto.
The taller boy stopped teasing and looked up into his eyes. “So Ryutaro here calls you Yama-chan huh? Can I call you that too?” The smile he had was too dazzling, and Ryosuke just turned away as he curtly replied, “That nickname’s used by my friends, Nakajima-san. We aren’t that close.”
“Ehh, Yama-chan. You know Yuto-kun?”
“Sure, we know each other. We’re in the same class and we sit together in class too.” Yuto provided Ryutaro with the information and the younger boy pounced onto Ryosuke.
“Yama-chan! You’ve not changed your attitude? I thought the anti-social Yama-chan was gone for good!” Keito pulled Ryutaro off Ryosuke, and the shorter boy looked at Keito with appreciation. It wasn’t like he didn’t want to open up. Too much things had happened for him to open up. Yamada Ryosuke didn’t want to get hurt.
No, not again.

“Yama-chan.” The nickname rolled out of his lips, and Yuto smiled at the sound of it. “You’re interested in him Yuto?” Keito had sent Ryutaro home and both of them were now on the way to the company.
Yuto remembered how Ryosuke refused their request to walk him home too, and he said something about running some errand before going home, and he just walked off. “He reminds me of someone from my past.”
“Your childhood friend here before you moved away?” As usual, Keito was good at reading the topic. A nod was given as an answer, and a bitter smile surfaced on Yuto’s lips.
Reaching into his pocket, Yuto pulled out his wallet and looked at a sketch of him drawn by his childhood friend. The drawing was torn into two pieces, and Yuto was holding onto one side of the drawing.

Plopping down onto his bed, Ryosuke just stared at the ceiling. He felt his heart clench. It was suffocating. “Ryosuke! It’s dinner!” “Alright!” With a push, he was back on his feet, running down the stairs to lay the table out for dinner.
“Oh gosh, it’s JUMP!” Ryosuke had cringed at the band’s name his sister just shouted. The television was now showing snippets of the 5-men band’s concert. They were Nakajima Yuto, Okamoto Keito, Yabu Kota, Yaotome Hikaru and Chinen Yuri.
A dreamy sigh came out from his sister’s lips, as she mumbled something like Yuto capturing her heart, and about being Chinen’s number one fan. “Ahh Nakajima. He was our neighbor when you were still living with your grandparents Reiko.”
“Uso!”
“You can ask your brother about that. They can be considered as childhood friends, since they were always sticking together back then.”
“Ryo-nii! Why didn’t you tell me that?” Reiko pouted, and Ryosuke peeked out from the book he was reading. An annoyed glare was directed at Reiko as he snapped his book close. “I’m going to sleep.”
***
“Kaa-chan, did something happen between Ryo-nii and Yuto-kun?”
“Nakajima-kun moved away, and Ryosuke cried to sleep almost every day. Though up till now, I still don’t know what did the Nakajimas moved out and came back again.”
***
“You never did tell me why you left, you idiot idol.” Curled up on his bed, Ryosuke looked at the picture of a younger version of the idol that he had sketched a long time ago.
Sighing, he placed that back into his sketch book. No one needs to know about their past. Especially if the person that was involved doesn’t seem to even remember.
***
It was true that both of them knew each other since young. Sticking to each other like glue. Reiko wasn’t there when all these happened, since she was frail and moved to Osaka to stay with their grandparents when she was still a baby. She had only come back living with them recently.
Ryosuke could still feel the warmth of the taller boy back when they were younger. Ever since they started schooling, both of them would end up in the same school. ‘Maybe that’s why we ended up in the same high school too.’
Yuto left when they were half way through their second year of junior high. He still remembered how his eyes were sore from crying every night, how his results went down to the bottom. He left without an explanation, without a single goodbye.
That’s why he didn’t open up to anyone else other than Ryutaro. He didn’t want to get hurt anymore.

“Yuto, you shouldn’t overwork yourself. Remember your medication too.” Yuto just nodded as he listened to Yabu lecturing him. He had almost fainted again because he forgot to take his medication.
Sighing, he popped the pills into his mouth and gulped down a mouthful of water. Keito patted him on the shoulder, “You scare all of us there. Why didn’t you tell us you’re on medication … for whatever reason?”
A chuckle escaped Yuto’s lips as he stared at the ceiling.
“No one knows except for Yabu-kun. I was sick when I was in my second year of junior high. I left this town, left someone important. All because of this stupid sickness that was eating away my life. Oh don’t worry; it’s now cured, somehow. The medication is just to make sure it doesn’t relapse.”
Keito didn’t prod further, and Yuto was thankful for that. After all, he had never told anyone about that except for the jimusho. He didn’t even tell the most important person of his life. He didn’t even tell Ryosuke before he left.
And when he came back, he acted like he didn’t know who Yamada Ryosuke was, and that had pained him when he saw disappointment in the shorter boy’s eyes. After all, they were lovers in their junior high days. Can they still be counted as lovers now?
“Ryosuke …”
